Biometric identification and verification is used to address a wide range of security risks including terrorism, access control, and identify theft, i.e. the Department of Homeland Security's United States Visitor and Immigrant Status Technology (US-VISIT). An individual's fingerprints are scanned at points-of-entry in the United States and searched against one of the largest biometric databases in the world to verify the individual is not a threat to U.S. security. Ideally, the US-VISIT program would be able to give immigration agents a real time match/no match answer for every person entering U.S. soil.
