Lucent Technologies to Open Vietnam Office in Hanoi


Company Sees Growing Need for Mobility Technology in Asia's Second Fastest Growing Telecommunications Market

HANOI, Vietnam, March 9 / -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) Vietnamese offices were opened today in Hanoi. A traditional Vietnamese ribbon cutting ceremony was held with the assistance of officials from the United States' Embassy in Vietnam. Located in Vincom City Tower, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi, Lucent's office opening signals a commitment to play a larger role in one of the fastest growing economies in the Southeast Asian region.

Quyen Ngo, general director, Lucent Technologies Vietnam Co., Ltd. will head this office. Ngo has more than 17 years experience with Lucent. He started his career in the switching group at Bell Labs, the company's world-renowned R&D organization. He has been working in the Asia Pacific region for nine years, having worked in Indonesia and Singapore and has been involved in Vietnam business development since 2003.

At a reception following the opening Bart Vogel, president of Lucent Technologies Asia Pacific said, "Our development of CDMA communications networks for both rural and urban areas of Vietnam has been successful, having rolled out a world-class wireless voice and data network. We look forward to having Quyen Ngo build on that success and we expect even greater contributions going forward."

Lucent is working with Vietnam Power Telecom (VP Telecom) to build a communications has infrastructure that will meet Vietnamese teledensity requirements. VP Telecom chose Lucent for its phase II CDMA450 network expansion project in June of 2005, using Lucent's CDMA2000(R) 1X solution for the 450 MHz spectrum band. Under this agreement, Lucent supplied VP Telecom with equipment and services to provide coverage for most provinces in northern Vietnam.

Lucent Worldwide Services (LWS), a leading network integrator, provided engineering, installation, testing, optimization, program management and training support for the project. A global leader in the development of commercial 3G spread-spectrum solutions, Lucent has deployed CDMA2000, CDMA450, and W-CDMA/UMTS networks with more than 35 customers on the ontinents of North and South America, Asia, Europe and in the Australia/New Zealand region. Lucent has deployed more than 140,000 spread-spectrum base stations for mobile operators worldwide, of which 90,000 are already supporting 3G services.

In 2005 the ITU rated Vietnam as the second fastest growing mobile market in Asia only after China.
