Linde Receives Cool Planet Award from Southern California Edison and The Climate Registry

Recognized for leadership in energy and carbon management

Murray Hill, New Jersey, U.S. – For displaying exemplary leadership in energy and carbon management, Southern California Edison (SCE) and The Climate Registry presented Linde North America, Inc., with the 2015 Cool Planet Award in the manufacturing sector/large business category. The Award was presented to Linde at an award ceremony at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California.

"Linde is committed to managing and reducing the environmental impact of our products and operations.  We strive to achieve this through an efficient energy management system that improves the efficiency of our plants and processes and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, said Pat Murphy, President, Linde Americas. “I’m proud to say that this Award recognizes our efforts in this area.”

Mike Anthony, senior account manager for Southern California Edison, said, “On behalf of SCE, I would like to congratulate Linde on winning the Cool Planet Award. Linde’s participation in SCE’s various energy efficiency and demand response programs has been exemplary, and serves as a model for other large companies looking to optimize operations, reduce costs, and provide environmental sustainability.”

“We are very proud and honored to receive this Award because it recognizes a true team effort between Linde Energy Affairs and the local Linde operations team,” said Steven Castracane, manager, Energy Regulatory Affairs for Linde. “One of the major activities of Linde Energy Affairs is working with utilities like SCE across the country to identify opportunities for load management, while the local teams implement the programs, as well as assure optimal mechanical efficiencies. It’s a great partnership and we are truly grateful for the recognition from SCE and The Climate Registry.”

Among the many parameters considered for the award are: a dedicated energy team, energy consumption metrics, employee education (such as Linde Area Manager Training), electricity demand response, and having a publically available Corporate Sustainability Report. “While these parameters are essential to receiving the Award, they are what Linde must do on a daily basis because electricity is such a major part of our plant operations and because we are continually striving to reduce our carbon footprint,” Castracane said.

David Rosenheim, executive director of The Climate Registry, said, “The State of California has shown tremendous political leadership and conviction on climate change over the years, and the need to take action is as urgent as ever. We commend the 2015 Cool Planet recipients for their outstanding achievements in energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and for demonstrating to other organizations that doing the right thing also makes good business sense.”

Linde operates four energy intensive plants in Southern California: an air separation plant in City of Industry, and three carbon dioxide plants in Carson, El Segundo and Torrance.
