Linde Details Furnace Convection Technology at FNA 2016

No Fans Needed to Boost Heat Treatment Furnace Productivity

BRIDGEWATER, N.J., Sept. 28, 2016 - During Furnaces North America (FNA) 2016, an expert from Linde LLC will outline how new convection technology is boosting furnace productivity and process efficiency without the use of circulation fans.

In a case study presentation, Akin Malas, head of metals market applications technology for the Americas Hub of Linde, will recap how metal parts suppliers are tightening parts quality by improving the circulation of the heat treatment atmosphere. New technology can achieve gains without fans, which can cause uneven convection and require frequent replacement.

The presentation titled, "Effective Furnace Atmosphere Circulation with New Furnace Technologies," is part of the Equipment/Maintenance technical session, and is scheduled for October 4 at 10:45 a.m. FNA 2016, at the Nashville Convention Center in Tennessee, October 4-5, is described as "a melting pot of the best minds in the heat treating industry."

"Many types of parts quality issues can be avoided with a proactive scrutiny of existing heat treatment processes, so it is critical to accurately monitor and tightly control furnace atmosphere circulation," Malas said. Specific advantages of advanced mixing and control technology apply depending on the type of furnace, including:

For Continuous Furnaces:

Potential of 10 percent higher productivity coinciding with increased heat transfer when the gas injector is placed at the unit inlet. Up to 35 percent increased productivity in the cooling zone. Better burn-off of oil and lubricant residue at the front of the furnace. Quicker conditioning when atmospheres are switched.

For Pit Furnaces:

More uniform heating and carburizing, resulting in up to 20 percent more efficient use of furnace space and potential gains in productivity. Up to three times longer furnace-lid life due to reduced corrosion levels.

For Rotary Retort Furnaces:

Up to 20 percent higher output when working with bulk materials due to deeper gas penetration. Longer retort life, increased throughput, and minimal formation of soft spots.

Overall, Linde's atmosphere control systems yield benefits across a variety of heat treatment furnaces, including better atmosphere mixing and control, reduced soot formation and increased unit productivity.
