L-3 Unidyne Awarded Two Contracts for Service Life Extension of U.S. Navy Air-Cushioned Landing Craft

NEW YORK -- Sept. 5, 2006--L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that its Unidyne (L-3 Unidyne) division was awarded two firm fixed price contracts with the U.S. Navy valued at $39.4 million for Service Life Extension of five Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) ships. The total potential contract value for L-3, including six option craft, is $94 million.

The LCAC is an essential element within the current and future United States Navy/Marine Corps amphibious warfare triad that provides heavy lift capability. The Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) will extend LCAC service life from twenty to thirty years. Modifications include repair and refurbishment of the hull, main engine upgrades, installation of a new skirt system, and upgrades to the communications and navigation systems. Under these awards, L-3 Unidyne will implement SLEP upgrades and modifications to five craft beginning in FY06, with options for six more craft beginning in FY07 at Assault Craft Unit 4 (ACU 4) in Little Creek, VA and ACU 5 in Camp Pendleton, CA.

"These awards solidify L-3 as the contractor of choice for the Navy's LCAC programs," said Ed Brown, president of L-3 Unidyne. "They were based on outstanding past performance, confirming our reputation as a premier provider in ship maintenance, upgrade and repair."

Mr. Brown also noted that L-3 Unidyne is working to expand its base of craft maintenance and service life extension work into the global market and that this award will have strategic importance as the company prepares bids for international customers.

The contracts were competitively solicited and awarded through the Navy's Southwest Regional Maintenance Center, San Diego, CA and Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, DC. The work will be performed primarily at Camp Pendleton, CA and Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, VA, with fabrication support from L-3 Unidyne production facilities in Norfolk, VA.

L-3 Unidyne provides a variety of engineering, logistics and technical services for ships, submarines, and shore facilities, primarily to U.S. Navy customers. Under a FY05 contract award, the company is performing Service Life Extension of 5 craft. L-3 Unidyne is part of L-3's Power and Control Systems group of companies.
