Institute reports May 2007 crude steel production.

World crude steel production for 67 countries reporting to International Iron and Steel Institute was 112.2 mmt in May, which is 6.4% above May 2006. China, Japan, South Korea, and India produced 15.7, 10.2, 4.4, and 3.7 mmt, respectively, providing increases of 15.7, 2.6, 6.3, and 2.8%. In Europe, Germany produced 4.0 mmt, up 0.8% compared to May 2006, while Spanish production was 1.7 mmt, 6.0% down from last year. France produced 1.8 mmt, down 0.8% and UK produced 1.3 mmt, up 3.7%.

May 2007 Crude Steel Production



World crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute was 112.2 million metric tons (mmt) in May. This is a 6.4% increase on May 2006.

China produced 41.3 mmt of crude steel in May. This is an increase of 15.7% compared to the same month of 2006. Japan produced 10.2 mmt, an increase of 2.6%. South Korean production was 4.4 mmt, an increase of 6.3%. May crude steel production in India was 3.7 mmt, an increase of 2.8%.

In Europe, Germany produced 4.0 mmt of crude steel in May, an increase of 0.8% compared to May 2006. Spanish production was 1.7 mmt, 6.0% down on the same month last year. France produced 1.8 mmt, down 0.8%. Production in the United Kingdom was 1.3 mmt in April, 3.7% higher than the same month of 2006.

Russia produced 6.3 mmt of crude steel in May, an increase of 1.9% compared to the same month last year. In Ukraine production was 3.7 mmt, up 3.3%.

Brazil produced 2.9 mmt of crude steel in May, up 16.2% on the same month last year.
