Innovative EV Solutions Across The Entire Value Chain

Battery electric vehicles (EV) are quickly becoming the focus over combustion engines as we look to the future of mobility. Big steps and remarkable developments have been achieved already to increase safety, performance, reach and lifetime of the heart of each EV: the battery pack. The journey has only just begun and while rolling into new directions, there are still various challenges facing engineers.

Finding the right solutions for demanding applications becomes even more complex as they are inevitably connected to other areas of the EV value chain. Today’s challenges need to be concerned by manufacturers, suppliers and innovators who have the big picture in mind. But hand on heart, who can claim to be a true expert in all areas of electric mobility? Looking back at our offering at The Battery Show Europe 2023, we can say: Challenge Accepted!

A Change to Experience the Beyond

For the first time, visitors coming to our booth were able to experience the knowhow, power and added value Saint-Gobain® can offer across all steps of the EV value chain – from solutions for minerals and mining, active cell materials and components, battery packs and components all the way up to energy productionEV infrastructure and fast charging. Our team and the many visitors who joined us had a great opportunity to talk about their unique applications and solutions.

Thermal Runaway Protection, for example, is still a major challenge in EV battery pack design. Compression pads from Saint-Gobain Tape Solutions provide the flattest CFD curve and combine optimized pressure with high-end thermal insulation and can be ideal solutions for most challenges. But what if additional fire venting of the housing, protection of the battery management system (BMS), filtration of sparks and toxic gases, etc., can be added? Combining solutions from different Saint-Gobain companies could enable new design options and added value that only optimally coordinated solutions from a global leader can provide.

The booth was a hub for discussions around the need for fast or even ultra-fast charging of your battery pack. How does that affect in-cell materials, cell design or heat management; will standard electrical insulation and shielding be enough and, in general, how can EV batteries and fast charging stations be optimally coordinated? The answers to such questions are those that can be found in combining leading solutions from a company that covers the entire EV value chain. The true added value of working with a solution provider who will partner with you to provide outside-the-box solutions and dedicated expertise in-house can make the difference in reaching new levels in battery electric mobility.

Maximize EV charging performance with special tapes

Okay, But No New Product Innovations?

We agree new and complex challenges require new ways of addressing them and in many cases products that push the limits and make the possible attainable. Our brand-new CHR® FR1000 Tape, manufactured on a mica substrate with high-temperature silicone adhesive suitable for flame mitigating properties, offers outstanding resistance to flame torch of temperatures up to 1,000°C. It offers excellent dielectric strength, while the burning of the adhesive forms a non-conductive ash, ideal for high-performance electrical insulation. In an extreme situation of battery thermal runaway in EV battery packs, this tape can help mitigate the severity.

Our Norseal® TRP Series includes soft, compressible pads that provide a high degree of protection against battery thermal runaway events, protect adjacent cells from going exothermic and help prevent the propagation of a thermal event from one cell to another.

Innovative ThermaCool® Thermally Conductive Silicone Gasketing Foams that were presented at this year's The Battery Show Europe include economical to high-performance products, thermally and electrically conductive silicone materials designed for various thermal management applications enhancing the thermal performance of electrical systems.

Facing the future together

The Battery Show Europe 2023 is over, but there are many other options to meet our team and discuss your challenges and needs.
