IISI releases statistics on crude steel production.

March 2007 Crude Steel Production



Brussels, 20 April 2007 - World crude steel production for the 67* countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute was 110.9 million metric tons (mmt) in March. This is 8.6% increase on March 2006. Total world crude steel production was 318.3 mmt in the first three months of 2007, a 10.2% increase over the first quarter of 2006.

In the first three months of 2007, the Asia region produced 173.6 mmt of crude steel. This is an increase of 16.3% on the same period of 2006. The Asia region has produced 54.5% of the world's crude steel this year.

China produced 40.2 mmt of crude steel in March. This is an increase of 20.4% compared to the same month of 2006. Japan produced 10.3 mmt, an increase of 6.0%. South Korean production was 4.3 mmt, an increase of 9.4%. March crude steel production in India was 4.2 mmt, an increase of 10.2%.

In Europe, Germany produced 4.2 mmt in March, an increase of 1.4% compared to March 2006. Italy was the second largest crude steel producer with 3.0 mmt, an increase of 3.7%. France produced 1.9 mmt, up 4.0%. Production in the United Kingdom was 1.2 mmt in March, -2.0% below the same month of 2006.

Russia produced 6.2 mmt of crude steel in March, an increase of 6.4% compared to the same month last year. In the Ukraine production was 3.7 mmt, up 11.5%. Total crude steel production in the CIS for the first quarter of 2006 was 31.0 mmt, up 9.7% on the same period last year.

Other major steel producing countries in March were Turkey (2.2 mmt, up 12.4%) and Brazil (2.8 mmt, up 12.4%).

*From 1 January 2007, Serbia and Montenegro have started to report their crude steel production figures separately. Figures for both countries are listed in the Other Europe region. This brings the total number of reporting countries to 67. These countries represented more than 98% of world crude steel production in 2006.
