Educational Activities Board and Women in Engineering Committee Offer Honoraria for Real World Engineering Projects as Part of New Initiative

8 May - The IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) and the Women in Engineering Committee (WIEC) are seeking unique hands-on project and online workshop ideas as part of a new initiative designed to enhance engineering education. Entitled "Real World Engineering Projects: EE, CE and CS Curricula," these projects and workshops will give students the opportunity to discover the relevance of contemporary electrical engineering, computer engineering, and computer science (EE/CE/CS) problems, generate enthusiasm about the engineering profession, and improve student retention, especially for female students.

Winning proposals will receive a US$5,000 honoraria as well as coverage in IEEE publications, Web sites and conferences. Abstracts are due by 31 May 2007.

Submitted projects should be targeted at first year college engineering students and focus on real-world problems whose solutions benefit society. Selected entries will be complied in an on-line library of contemporary, hands-on projects. Similarly, a call for workshops has also been issued for high quality, online, self-study workshops on the best pedagogical techniques for the EE/CE/CS classroom. Workshops may address teaching at all levels of an undergraduate degree program.

Full details including sample abstracts and submission forms can be found on the Real World Engineering Web site. Individuals with questions should contact Barbara Stoler, Educational Activities, at b.stoler@ieee.org or Amy Bell, initiative leader, at abell@vt.edu.
