Garrettcom Expands In Europe ¬ Further Evidence That Ethernet Is Growing As The Industrial Network Of Choice

GarrettCom Europe makes key new appointments

GarrettCom Europe reports a rapid expansion in Europe, and has taken on new personnel to provide increased technical support and to focus on core markets. But most importantly the company sees this as further evidence of Ethernet's growing dominance in all areas of the industrial automation market.

Where Ethernet's role in industrial systems was once limited to transferring production information between the plant floor controllers and the higher level business systems, the technology is now able to provide a networking backbone for critical automation functions in configuration and diagnostics, control, synchronisation and motion, and safety. Implementors of industrial control systems are quickly realising the benefits of Ethernet - such as interoperability across multiple vendors, high bandwidth, topological flexibility and optional redundancy.

Further recent developments in Power over Ethernet enable data and power to be combined on the same copper cabling, greatly simplifying installation and reducing costs, and offering the single-media data and power transmission formerly only offered by fieldbuses. At the same time, specific industry standards have been defined - such as IEC 61850 in the power utilities market - have seen Ethernet grow to dominance for systems networks.

This growth in the market for industrial Ethernet has seen a corresponding rise in demand for GarrettCom's hardened Ethernet products. As part of its European expansion, GarrettCom Europe has taken on three new members of staff: Trevor Hayes, Dave Cook and Andy Lester.

Trevor Hayes joins as an account manager in the company's utilities division. He brings with him over 20 years experience in the process automation and industrial data communication markets across sectors such as the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, utility, transport, defence, nuclear, telecommunication and factory automation industries.

Dave Cook joins as a major account manager, and brings extensive expertise with a background in Ethernet, wireless and fibre optic systems.

Andy Lester joins from Westermo as a technical support engineer. His new role will see him talking through technical issues with customers, answering questions directly or if testing is required, feeding back results from GarrettCom's US test labs.

GarrettCom Europe leads the field in providing cost-effective, off-the-shelf Ethernet products for demanding industrial applications. The GarrettCom product range spans more than 100 different product models, encompassing Ethernet switches, hubs, media converters, repeaters, concentrators, and transceivers, offering Gb data transmission speeds and allowing users to mix and match copper and fibre communications media. Further, GarrettCom Europe is the only supplier to offer a full line of heavy-duty PoE power-sourcing switches, ranging from small 4-port switches to rugged 32-port managed switches with Gb backbones.
