First Order for HD MPEG-4 Encoder Leading Broadcaster Selects Grass Valley ViBE for Demonstration HD Services

A leading European public broadcaster, planning to launch an HD service during 2006 which will include showing key matches from the FIFA World Cup, has become the first major user to order the new MPEG-4 encoder for the ViBE platform from Grass Valley.

The new ViBE module was unveiled at IBC2005 for delivery in mid-February 2006. This date meets the needs of broadcasters, particularly in Europe, looking to start HD services as soon as practical, as this order demonstrates.

MPEG-4 offers the prospect not just of high picture quality but of compression efficiency too, a factor which is particularly important when introducing HD. Simulated demonstrations at IBC2005 clearly showed that the ViBE MPEG-4 encoder would deliver a robust signal to the home, excellent picture quality and full surround sound at bit rates of 10 or 12 Mb/s. This allows broadcasters to deliver an HD channel in the bandwidth currently required for just two MPEG-2 SD channels.
