FCI Develops Serial Attached SCSI Right-Angle Connectors

ETTERS, PA. (February 7, 2005)--FCI, a leading manufacturer of connectors and interconnect systems, has developed 29-position, right-angle receptacle connectors for attaching Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk drives (HDDs) to processor blades, storage blades, mezzanine cards, or embedded system boards in data, communications, and industrial equipment. The raised receptacle openings are offset from the top surface of the carrier board to provide clearance for components to be mounted beneath an installed hard drive. Nominally 4.7mm clearance is provided under a 2.5" hard drive.

"FCI offers options for through-hole solder or surface mount termination allowing designers to choose the termination technique best suited to their board design and planned manufacturing process," said Conway Spykerman, FCI Global Product Manager. "Each connector also features stamped retention clips that provide additional mechanical strength and stability after soldering."

The high-speed, serial interface is designed to support differential signaling, initially at speeds of 3.0 Gbps. The SAS receptacle accepts either SAS or SATA (Serial ATA) drives, giving the system manufacturer the option to deploy cost-effective SATA drives or higher-performance SAS drives for mission-critical applications.

The right-angle SAS receptacle connectors are RoHS-compatible. Typical prices are in the range of $1.00 to $2.00 each for 1,000-piece order quantities, depending on the connector configuration. Samples are available for delivery, with production lead times from stock to four weeks.

FCI offers a wide range of SATA and SAS plug and receptacle connectors encompassing both client and enterprise applications. Vertical and right-angle connector configurations provide options for motherboard, server blade, HDD carrier, backplane, and cable connections.
