Extreme Networks Unveils Powerful Network Solutions to Solve Tough Challenges and Preserve Design Equity

New Switches and Software to Tame Demanding Expectations for Convergence, Security and Management Challenges at the Edge of the Network

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 23 /- Extreme Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXTR) today announced a family of network solutions that tame chaos at the network edge with versatility, simplicity and integrity. This new set of edge capabilities gives enterprises the freedom to create secure converged networks and support advanced network applications at a price that lets designers afford lasting solutions even when future demands are unclear.

Now, network designers can benefit from consistent features across a broad range of fixed-configuration edge switches and powerful policy design and management tools that combine to accommodate future requirements and preserve design equity.

Extreme Networks(R) is introducing four major new products. First, the company's new Summit(R) X250 series fixed configuration switches that offer advanced application support in a 10/100 Mbps package. Second, ExtremeXOS(TM) version 12.0 with SummitStack(TM) stacking capabilities, giving network designers the freedom to mix and match switches with diverse capabilities. Third, the Summit WM200/2000 wireless LAN controller for secure, scalable support of mobile applications and continued integration of wired and wireless networks. (See separate press release issued today.) And finally, the Universal Port Manager, a part of EPICenter(R), which supports the entire policy lifecycle with a powerful graphical management interface.

With these new capabilities at the edge of the network, Extreme Networks leads the industry with powerful Layer 3 switching, security, automated network provisioning, high availability and resiliency features that are available in a wide range of switches utilizing a uniform operating system, including affordable 10/100 fixed configurations. As a result, enterprises can avoid overspending on Gigabit speeds when raw speed is not necessary to obtain the advanced features needed to build convergence-ready infrastructure solutions.

"As an ever-increasing number of organizations converge their enterprise networks, the types of devices connected to the network and their resource requirements are changing," said Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise voice and data at Infonetics, a leading market research firm. "With its latest product offering, Extreme Networks makes it easy for organizations to apply the proper service levels to devices, whether they're laptops, IP phones, or IP cameras, so that the network can keep up with the demands of real-time communications."

"Extreme Networks now offers a consistent, robust family of network products aimed at the critical requirements and expectations for the edge of the network," said Scott Lucas, senior director of marketing for Extreme Networks. "These products offer a unique and compelling value and are designed to answer the call of enterprises that have encountered dead-end solutions, unnecessary spending and unmet expectations related to the challenges found at the network edge."

New Fixed-Configuration 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switches

The new Summit X250 series fixed configuration switches provide versatility and performance at 10/100 speeds, are available in 24 and 48 port models, and are designed to support mission-critical enterprise applications. With low latency, line-rate performance and available PoE on every port, these switches are ideal for today's value-conscience yet demanding network edge. Similar to the Summit X450 switch, the Summit X250 switch comes with two 10 Gigabit stacking ports for inter-switch connectivity. The Summit X250 switch is powered by the ExtremeXOS modular software operating system, available with Extreme Networks award winning BlackDiamond(R) switches.

"The versatility of Extreme Networks Summit X250 series switches gives us the key functionality we require for speed, performance and availability, meeting the differing dimensions of state and local government," said Glen Rutherford, network architect for the state of North Dakota. "With the Summit family, whether we are implementing and managing a high capacity Metro Ethernet ring or supporting emerging desktop applications such as VoIP, we can set one design philosophy and be ready to leverage the switches that we purchase in the future."

ExtremeXOS 12.0 with SummitStack

With version 12.0, ExtremeXOS now supports SummitStack for unified management of up to 8 fixed configuration switches as a single virtual switch. This is in addition to numerous value-added features with ExtremeXOS, including, the Universal Port, integrated IPv6 support, and multiple supplicant of 802.1x security.

SummitStack eases management tasks, enhances scalability and increases availability. With a highly available architecture and the capability to quickly recover from individual switch failures, SummitStack is ideal for IP convergence at the edge.

SummitStack also offers the most versatile solution for managing "mixed and matched" fixed switches. With support for a range of speeds, port densities, media types, power options, and switches designed for edge or aggregation roles, network managers can enjoy an unprecedented range of options that give them the freedom to create the stack that meets their needs. SummitStack quickly recovers from failures to help ensure business continuity and application quality, making SummitStack well qualified for use in not only edge but in aggregation and small core roles as well.

ScreenPlay(TM) Flash-based management

ExtremeXOS 12.0 now includes ScreenPlay, a Flash-based, on switch management tool that provides an intuitive graphical management platform for simplified management. ScreenPlay helps network managers become more productive with a straightforward navigation model that eases and speeds access to detailed configuration and status information from a dashboard menu level.

Extreme Networks EPICenter with the new Universal Port Manager

The EPICenter management suite is now integrated with the new Universal Port Manager, providing network managers another tool in their mission to efficiently implement policy-compliant networks. Extreme Networks Universal Port Manager addresses the entire policy lifecycle with centralized tools to design, test, troubleshoot, deploy, and monitor event-driven edge provisioning based on Extreme Networks Universal Port framework. The framework automates the discovery and activation of users and devices as they enter the network and utilizes industry standards including LLDP and 802.1x.

Pricing and Availability:
