Entrust Highlights Importance of ePassport Inspection at International Civil Aviation Organization Symposium

ICAO's annual conference focuses on eMRTDs, border inspection security solutions

DALLAS, Nov. 2, 2010 - Border security experts from Entrust, Inc., expressed a direct and important message to the attendees and participants of the International Civil Aviation (ICAO) Sixth Symposium in Montreal Monday: "No ePassport issuance without inspection." While governments across the globe have been focused on issuing first- and second-generation ePassports, the value of these efforts are limited if countries aren't also implementing the technology to inspect and validate their authenticity.

"The migration toward ePassport technology is critical, but we're failing to capitalize on the investment if these documents aren't properly inspected," said Entrust President and CEO Bill Conner. "Governments remain diligent in their issuance of ePassports, but until we're also authenticating the documents at border security checkpoints we'll fall short of establishing universal trust between countries."

Entrust product marketing manager David Mahdi expanded on this issue during Entrust's presentation, "No Issuance without Inspection: The Rise of Electronic Documents & the Importance of Electronic Validation." Mahdi carefully outlined the need for proper inspection stations and how organizations can deploy the necessary technology.

Highlighting the continuing growth of first- and second-generation ePassport issuance, the presentation provided some of the necessary components required for proper ePassport inspection, including implementation, establishing trust links, integrating with public-key directories (PKD), certificate key management, maintenance and more.

For organizations that don't currently possess the resource or expertise to implement these components in-house, Entrust provides a hosted, PKI-based inspection service that can be seamlessly integrated with the ICAO PKD and domestic no-fly lists, and is also compliant with ICAO and EU standards.

The ICAO Symposium, which runs Nov. 1-4 at the organization's headquarters in Montreal, has a primary focus on eMRTDs, biometric technology and other border/travel security standards. Last year's event was attended by more than 500 participants from states, international organizations, security vendors and interested institutions.
