Emerson Joins Engineering and Construction Specialists to Expand Industrial Gasification Capabilities

New venture combines Emerson's automation expertise with the engineering and construction experience of Corval Ryan, Mustang Engineering, and Barr Engineering

AUSTIN, TEXAS (May 4, 2010) - Emerson Process Management, Corval Ryan, Mustang Engineering, and Barr Engineering today announced a new alliance focused on providing comprehensive engineering and project management solutions for industrial gasification conversion projects throughout North America.

The venture combines the strengths of the individual companies to address the critical project development needs of this emerging marketplace that convert low-value materials such as municipal solid waste, chemical waste, hazardous materials and other industrial wastes into syngas or other high-value energy products. Worldwide gasification capacity is projected to grow 70 percent by 2015, according to the Gasification Technologies Council. Volatile energy prices, more stringent environmental regulations and growing interest in clean energy options is driving the growth of gasification and biomass conversion projects.

Specifically, Emerson brings extensive automation and process control expertise in gasification, alternative fuels and the traditional power industries. Corval Ryan is a fully-integrated construction, fabrication and solutions management company that provides specialized expertise in biomass and gasification. Mustang Engineering provides environmentally-oriented engineering and construction services to the LNG, carbon management, renewable fuels and power, and water resources markets. Barr Engineering specializes in environmental permitting, management and compliance assistance.

"Bringing together these engineering and construction leaders that specialize in gasification and biomass conversion creates a powerhouse that will help this emerging market realize lower project risk, better cost control and high reliability from the get-go," says Al Novak, director, alternative fuels for Emerson Process Management.

Corval Ryan, which focuses on chemical waste, municipal solid waste, industrial waste and other gasification projects, is currently working on gasification projects across the country.

"We are excited about the offering that this team can bring to the market," says Bob Cutshall, president of Corval Ryan. "By combining the expertise of Emerson, Mustang, and Barr, with Corval Ryan's combined 150 years of construction experience, we now offer our clients the experience necessary to deliver viable gasification projects from inception to completion."

Chick Houseman, president of Mustang Process Plants Group says, "Mustang is pleased to have the opportunity to work with such an experienced group of companies. We believe this group of companies offers a unique solution to this emerging market."

Barr Vice President Joel Trinkle says, "We're looking forward to helping clients and the Corval Ryan team successfully navigate the complex environmental permitting and review process for these projects."

Emerson brings extensive experience in not only the alternative energy industry but also the traditional power industry. Emerson has committed significant resources to help alternative energy companies translate their technologies into large-scale commercial production of eco-friendly fuels. In addition to the industrial gasification venture, Emerson is working with nearly a dozen other alternative energy companies. With decades of experience in the power industry, Emerson's plant automation and control technologies support 600 gigawatts of the world's power-generation capacity.
