Electrochem wins Economic Impact Award for New State-of-the-Art Technology Facility

December 1, 2008 - Electrochem announced today its selection as one of the
Massachusetts Alliance for Economic Development's Fifth Annual Team Massachusetts
Economic Impact Award winners. The award was presented at a November 25th ceremony
at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel. This is the only awards event of its kind in
Massachusetts, honoring a select group of companies from across the Commonwealth who
are recognized for their outstanding contributions to the Massachusetts economy.

The winning companies were selected based on their attributes in the categories of job
growth, facility expansion, investment, and community involvement. Jerry Sargent, Alliance
Chair and Executive Vice President from Citizens Bank, said, "The Team Massachusetts
Economic Impact Awards allows us to honor companies not only at a state level, but those
that are making waves worldwide. The winning companies all strengthen the bedrock of the
Commonwealth as a prominent location for businesses' expansion."

Electrochem was awarded the Gold Award for the Southeast region. "We are honored to
receive this award," said Susan Bratton, Senior Vice President, Electrochem. "Our company
is committed to continuing to grow our business here. Massachusetts offers a welcoming
economic climate and highly talented and educated work force for our highly technical
products."

Electrochem's new facility, which opened in August, houses its battery manufacturing and
research & development. Facility highlights include a "business sensible" green facility that
enables the company to reduce operating costs, improve the work environment for
employees, and reduce impact on the environment.

Susan Houston, Executive Director of the Alliance, observed that the process of selecting the
winners was extremely difficult. "The judges did not arrive at their decision lightly; there are
so many good stories from a variety of industries. All the companies nominated enhance the
Massachusetts economy, and we're proud to be able to recognize them."

The Massachusetts Alliance for Economic Development is a private, non-profit partnership of
business, industry leaders, and government dedicated to fostering economic growth in the
Commonwealth.
