EASTEC Leads Manufacturers into New DoD and Homeland Security Opportunities
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 12, 2009 - Precision manufacturers know that the technologies and methods of the military and commercial aircraft industries often set the standards for other industries. Companies that successfully sell into the Department of Defense market have an advantage in other sectors as well. However, developing the expertise to navigate the confusing maze of the DoD market can be perplexing. EASTEC, the largest annual manufacturing event on the East Coast, has partnered with the Regional Technology Corporation to help end that confusion.
On Thursday, May 21, the RTC will offer three informative presentations at its EASTEC DoD/Homeland Security Business Opportunities Resource Center to help manufacturers develop new business opportunities. "There are definitely strict procedures and tactics necessary to successfully enter the DoD market," notes Ellen Bemben, president of the RTC. "That's why we pulled together MOM database, laser and lean experts. Understanding the potential of each area and taking advantage of what they have to offer will not only help open the door to DoD business, but in doing so, will offer a competitive advantage in other markets as well."
RTC presentations will include:
The DoD Manufacturing Opportunities Matching (MOM) Database: 'MOM' Knows Best! - Russell Kruzelock, PhD, president and CEO, Cenovance LLC,
San Antonio, Texas
Laser Processing for Aerospace - Terry VanderWert, president, PRIMA North America, Chicopee, Mass.
Landing DoD Contracts: What You Need to Know as a Supply Chain Member - Anthony J. Attardo, finance - operations, Raytheon, Search/Navigation Systems, Waltham, Mass.
"The aerospace industry is, of necessity, conservative toward adopting new manufacturing methods," suggests presenter Terry VanderWert, president, PRIMA North America. "Nevertheless, laser processing has become an important tool for manufacturing components for aircraft and aircraft engines. With the continual development of new laser sources and new capabilities for controlling laser processes, I am optimistic that laser technology will become even more important."
EASTEC is co-sponsored by SME, the American Machine Tool Distributors' Association and the Association for Manufacturing Technology. The event celebrates its 30th anniversary May 19-21 at Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Mass., and is expected to draw more than 14,000 attendees and 600 exhibitors. Spread over 160,000 square feet, EASTEC consists of five technology-focused areas: design, engineering and rapid technologies; tooling, workholding and machining accessories; automation and process improvement; plant, energy and environmental efficiency; and precision manufacturing equipment and systems. Attendees can also learn how to maximize their use of technology and learn about leading-edge, cost-effective approaches through four new EASTEC Resource Centers: Lean and Green, Energy, Medical and Aerospace and Defense.
The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) is the premier source for manufacturing knowledge, education and networking. Through its many programs, events and activities, SME connects manufacturing practitioners to each other, to the latest technology and the most up-to-date processes spanning all manufacturing industries and disciplines, plus the key areas of aerospace and defense, medical device, motor vehicles, including motorsports, and oil and gas. A 501(c)3 organization, SME has members in more than 70 countries and is supported by a network of technical communities and chapters worldwide.
