DHS Official to Discuss Agency's Visionary Goals at IEEE Homeland Security Symposium
WASHINGTON -- Dr. Reginald Brothers, under secretary for science and technology at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), will give an overview of the agency's long-term goals for its Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate during the opening keynote at the 2015 IEEE International Symposium on Technologies for Homeland Security (HST '15).
Set for the Westin Waltham (Mass.) Boston 14-16 April 2015, HST '15 will bring together leading researchers and innovators working on technologies designed to deter and prevent homeland attacks, protect critical infrastructures and people, mitigate damage and expedite recovery.
"As the primary research and development arm of DHS, S&T needs to look ahead - 20 to 30 years out - to determine where we should be dedicating our research and development resources now," Brothers said when the goals were announced on 22 October.
The goals, which will drive S&T's strategic plan, are:
•Â Screening at Speed: Security that Matches the Pace of Life
• A Trusted Cyber Future: Protecting Privacy, Commerce and Community
• Enable the Decision Maker: Actionable Information at the Speed of Thought
• Responder of the Future: Protected, Connected and Fully Aware
• Resilient Communities: Disaster-Proofing Society
Brothers, who has a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT, will also talk about expanding S&T's partnerships, making it easier to work with the directorate and starting a national conversation to get people to share ideas on how to best enhance the security of the United States, its citizens and visitors. A panel session will follow.
HST '15 will be the 14(th) in a series that began after the tragedy of 9/11 when IEEE members in New England conceived of a conference to encourage technological development that bolsters U.S. security. International partners are encouraged to participate.
