Compact Drive Technology from Rexroth for Economical Complete Machining

Ultra-compact, motor-integrated drives are used to power the feed axes of the 5-axis machining head.

AXXIOM, the new 5-axis CNC machining center from Anderson Europe can be used to completely machine formed parts made from timber, plastic, or lightweight metals up to 1,300 mm in height, features motor-integrated IndraDrive Mi drives with energy recovery capability from Rexroth to set a new standard in energy efficiency.

Anderson Europe GmbH, a subsidiary of the Taiwanese-based Anderson Industrial Group, assembles the AXXIOM and equips it with high-tech drives to meet customer requirements in Dornstetten, Germany. To this end, the engineers rely on drive units from Rexroth to realize the feed axes. The IndraDrive line of drives from Rexroth covers the entire performance range from 50 W to 1,000 kW with precision scalability and includes a wide variety of rotary motors, direct drives and motor-integrated drives. All variants feature more than one hundred integrated technological functions and open interfaces to popular field buses and Ethernet-based control communication systems.

Ultra-compact, motor-integrated drives are used to power the feed axes of the 5-axis machining head, which has a positioning speed of up to 70 meters per minute. Connected in series by a single hybrid cable, the drives minimize the masses to be moved and thus reduce the drive power required. The servo motors with recovery capability also take up to 70 percent less control cabinet space and have lower cooling requirements. The modular power supply modules are used to feed the brake energy harnessed (recuperated) back to the supply network as required. The considerably reduced energy requirements of the machining center increase efficiency with each cycle.

The high-frequency drive for the spindles, which operate at speeds of 5,000 to 40,000 rpm, is a key contributor to overall dynamics. High-speed cutting technology ensures excellent cutting quality, minimal burring, and evacuation of heat with the chips. The movable tool head can also machine complex geometries in a single clamping. The variant equipped with two component tables allows the operator to load an additional workpiece while machining.

Rexroth has become one of the most established automation partners for woodworking machines with its line of precision-scalable drive and control solutions. The manufacturer will be presenting numerous solutions that achieve higher energy efficiency at this year's LIGNA as well as comprehensive safety concepts in anticipation of the new machinery directive to take effect at the end of 2009.
