Caliper Life Sciences Collaborates with University of Miami to Automate Next Generation Sequencing Workflows

o Caliper and University of Miami Collaborate to Develop Automated Protocols for Exome Capture and Sequencing Library Preparation

HOPKINTON, Mass., February 3, 2011 - Caliper Life Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: CALP) today announced a collaboration with the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG) at the University of Miami. As part of this agreement, HIHG is working with Caliper to develop automated protocols for exome capture and library preparation workflows. HIHG has been an early access partner for the recently released high sensitivity assay for Caliper's LabChip® GX platform.

"At HIHG, we conduct genetic studies that contribute to the better understanding of inherited genetic diseases and disorders," said John Gilbert, PhD, Professor and Director of the Center for Genome Technology at the HIHG. "With our recent implementation of higher capacity sequencing technologies, and our focus on exome sequencing projects, sample preparation has become a bottleneck. We are actively working with Caliper to automate multiple steps of this process and increase our overall sequencing throughput."

"The research being conducted at HIHG is extraordinary and will significantly expand the molecular understanding of disease," said Kevin Hrusovsky, President and CEO of Caliper Life Sciences. "Caliper is excited to collaborate with the HIHG to enable higher throughput exome sequencing."

Details of this collaboration will be presented at the Advances in Genome Biology and Technology conference taking place from February 2-5 in Marco Island, Florida. For a complete list of presentations taking place at AGBT, please visit http://agbt.org/agenda.html.

About Hussman Institute for Human Genomics at the University of Miami

The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG) was established at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in January 2007 to discover the genetic influences on human health and apply this knowledge to the practice of medicine through improved diagnostics, treatments, and medications, thus translating the unprecedented scientific advance of the "Human Genome Project" into information that can benefit patients directly. The Institute is committed to collaborative pan-institutional initiatives, ensuring that resources, skills, and ideas forthcoming from novel genetic and genomic approaches will be made available to the entire medical community.
