BT Offers 'Beyond the Cloud' Guidance at Gartner ITxpo

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 19 - GARTNER SYMPOSIUM/ITxpo - At the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo today, BT today shared its vision for cloud services for large enterprises, offering a balanced approach to cloud computing - helping customers move beyond the hype to implement valuable, reliable, and cost-effective real world solutions.
CIOs and CTOs are being confronted with a deluge of information about everything cloud, and unhelpfully, many technology companies are simply re-branding products and services as cloud, a phenomenon Neil Sutton, vice president, Portfolio, BT Global Services, described as 'cloud washing.'
In his comments today, Sutton described how CIOs and CTOs need the ability to determine what infrastructure, software and communications services to manage in-house, what to outsource and what to move out into the cloud as a managed service. Sutton addressed how to balance these requirements and offered advice on how to best seize the opportunities and manage the risks.
"Large organizations want to realize the benefits of cloud computing - such as flexibility, more reliable services, reduced financial risk, and lower costs - but they first need to get beyond the confusion surrounding cloud terminology, focus on deliverable business results and look at what they have to do to make cloud solutions work for them," said Sutton.
"When all is said and done, what organizations want is to be more efficient and flexible, and make their people more productive. Today already we are working with global corporations to achieve those ends by delivering infrastructure as a service, communications as a service, and software as a service."
Sutton also highlighted the innovation work underway at BT - in BT's labs, in tailored innovations sessions with customers, and with a wide range of universities, government research teams and partners around the world. He explained how recent innovations such as BT's 'Cloud-Broker' capability developed in BT's labs will change the way BT's customers plan their managed services activities and boost their confidence in being able to manage multiple cloud-based services. Sutton also discussed how BT's innovations around its Virtual Data Center propositions are already delivering financial and operational benefits for customers.
Sutton concluded, "BT is already assisting some of the largest businesses in the world manage these challenges by helping them understand the linkage between the customer, the business, the application and the infrastructure."
In recent months, BT's innovation capabilities were recognized in a series of prestigious awards, including three Global Telecom Business awards (Local Optical Network, New Media Innovation, IT Service Innovation, Business Migrations Innovation), the IET Innovation Awards 2009 for Best Innovation in Telecommunications and the TM Forum Innovation Awards 2010 for Business Excellence for Innovation.
