Breakthrough Lighting Technology for the Treatment of Winter Depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder

BOULDER, Colo., Dec. 6, 2005 -- The United States Patent Office has awarded a patent to Charles Bolta, CEO of American Environmental Products, Inc. (AEP), for his
Blue-Lux(TM) Light technology. This is the newest breakthrough technology for use in the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly known as the winter depression, or the winter blues. As the days get shorter the onset of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a clinically proven form of depression, impacts nearly 10 million people in the United States, of which 80 percent are female.

Current research indicates that the absence of sunlight triggers a biochemical reaction that may cause symptoms such as loss of energy, fatigue, lethargy, decreased activity, sadness, excessive eating, carbohydrate cravings and sleepiness. Individuals affected by "winter depression" who go untreated can lose their jobs, destroy relationships, and isolate themselves from their communities, and their physical and mental health will continue to suffer. Studies also indicate the cost of clinical depression exceeds $47.3 billion annually, of which $24 billion comprises lost productivity and worker absenteeism on the job.

The major problem with current treatment is the lengthy time commitment of 30 minutes to 2 hours needed to receive the necessary therapy. This lengthy time therapy regimen results in a 60 percent failure rate of the prescribed treatment.

Until Now

Blue-Lux(TM) Light technology can reduce the required time commitment by 50 percent and more, with positive effects that can be realized within days, versus weeks. This technology is presently available to the public and is used in American Environmental Products' Sun-A-Lux(R) Light Therapy Boxes and Glad-Light(TM) Desk Lamps.

Blue-Lux(TM) Difference

-- Fast 15-minutes-a-day treatment time
-- Quicker response - days instead of weeks
-- Increased quality of response
-- Greater freedom with lighter, more portable units
-- Close-range or whole-room usage

1) Blue-Lux(TM) technology combines a specific wave length in the blue spectrum with a high intensity offset scotopic light to produce a faster and stronger response than all other 10,000 lux and Full Spectrum Light Boxes.

2) Blue-Lux(TM) technology has also made all its light boxes more powerful and easier to use. In years past it took 30 minutes to 2 hours of light therapy to produce the same effects as 15 minutes of the new Blue-Lux(TM) Technology.

3) With typical light therapy products, a person must sit within 2 feet of the source of light therapy for a period of 30 minutes to 2 hours. With the new Blue-Lux(TM) technology, one simply has to be in the room to benefit. For instance, if a person were in a 10 by 10 room they'd receive the benefits simply from walking around the room. No longer does one need to sit directly in front of the light therapy source to receive the benefits. This new technology has also been introduced into American Environmental Products' Glad
Light(TM) Desk Lamp Combo.

4) Blue-Lux(TM) Light between 420-480 nm has been found to significantly reduce melatonin levels, which affect winter blues and winter depression. Sun-A-Lux is proud to announce a light bulb that incorporates a bulb rich in 420-480 nm Blue Light color into its 10,000 Blue-Lux(TM) bulb, hence the Combo. The new Sun-A-Lux combo bulb combines scotopic white light and blue light.
