Basf Named "Industry Supplier of the Year" for Emerging Battery Materials Component Market

ISELIN, NJ, October 7, 2010 - BASF has been named "Industry Supplier of the Year" for the battery materials component market at the Battery Show Expo held yesterday in San Jose, California. Judged by a panel of renowned journalists and independent specialists from various countries, the award acknowledges engineering excellence in the emerging field of battery materials manufacturing.

BASF was specifically recognized for its advanced NCM (Nickel Cobalt Manganese) cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which allow higher energy density, improved safety due to higher temperature stability, and increased efficiency by enabling more discharge/charge cycles for batteries. Due to a very high degree of purity and excellent product characteristics, these materials are well suited for evolving requirements of batteries in automotive drivetrains.

"It is a true honor to receive this award," said Dr. Markus Hölzle, General Manager, BASF Battery Materials. "Addressing the challenges in automotive battery applications that will help make lithium-ion batteries realistic, affordable and widely available in automotive drivetrains is a key part of BASF's growth strategy."

Award winners at this year's event were selected by specialists from The Battery Show and Battery Technology EXPO, as well as industrial experts from both Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology International and Batteries & Energy Storage Technology magazines. Judges were focused on advanced battery technology solutions that can offer the best performance, economy, and durability to the industry.

"We are delighted with the response from the industry to The Battery Show Awards," said James Reader, President of Smarter Shows. "The quality of submissions has been exceptional, and the judging panel certainly had their work cut out for them this year."

BASF offers a range of new and emerging solutions for the lithium-ion battery market. These include cathode materials to allow higher energy density, safety and efficiency, as well as plastics engineered to offer protection from tough automotive environments and opportunities for light weighting.
