AWC Partners with Fire Groups on Distance Learning

Leesburg, VA. – The American Wood Council (AWC) has partnered with the Virginia Fire Prevention Association (VFPA) and Virginia Fire Marshal Academy to offer free distance learning opportunities for state fire inspectors.

“In light of the COVID-19 pandemic facing our fire and code enforcement communities, code enforcement personnel have been affected by the inability to attend continuing education opportunities. This partnership will allow fire inspectors to continue essential continuing education during this time,” said VFPA President Ernie Little.

The course schedule to be presented online for Virginia follows and could be modified for other interested groups:

  • Demobilizing Construction Sites Safely Using the Model Codes
  • Construction Fire Safety Best Practices
  • Tall Mass Timber Buildings & Fire Service Concerns
  • Pre-planning and Fire Suppression of Buildings Under Construction
  • I-joists and Firefighter Safety

“AWC had an existing framework in place for free distance and on-demand learning on wood design and construction topics. We’re pleased to be able to partner with the Virginia Fire Prevention Association and Virginia Fire Marshal Academy to help provide education opportunities,” said AWC Fire Service Relations Manager Ray O’Brocki.

If other organizations are interested in distance learning, please contact Ray O’Brocki at fire@awc.org. Additionally, AWC can provide distance learning for the building code and structural engineering community. Our on-demand eCourses and live presentations can be found on the AWC website, or specific presentations can be requested using the online form.

The American Wood Council (AWC) is the voice of North American wood products manufacturing, an industry that provides almost 450,000 men and women in the United States with family-wage jobs. AWC represents 86 percent of the structural wood products industry, and members make products that are essential to everyday life from a renewable resource that absorbs and sequesters carbon. Staff experts develop state-of-the-art engineering data, technology, and standards for wood products to assure their safe and efficient design, as well as provide information on wood design, green building, and environmental regulations. AWC also advocates for balanced government policies that affect wood products.
