HONG KONG, May 23 /- Asia Netcom today announced its new Country-Specific Route (CSR) IP Transit Service, which enables customers to enjoy performance guarantees for content access while leveraging the cost efficiency of the Internet.
Each Country-Specific Route option will have its corresponding set of performance guarantees, and customers can subscribe to one or all of the Country-Specific Routes available with performance guarantees tied to each of the Routes being selected.
In its initial phase, the service is available to ISPs/CSPs from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia, on the following routes: China, Japan, Greater China, Australia, and Taiwan.
"By creating dedicated and direct routes within its backbone, Asia Netcom's CSR service effectively allows ISPs and CSPs to access a fast lane on the Internet," said Mark Simpson, Chief Operating Officer, Asia Netcom. "With CSR, our customers' traffic gets to their destination faster -- improving performance across an optimized link, with a superior price performance and more efficient use of bandwidth."
A major issue for the Internet today is the lack of a mechanism to ensure quality of service. With most Internet connections, packets are sent to their destination in a best-effort manner. In some cases, network congestion could result in extended latency times and poor user experience.
As users of public services consume more sophisticated applications over the Internet, from online gaming, voice and video file-sharing to private implementations of online collaboration suites and intra-office communications, there is a growing requirement for Internet connectivity to assure performance for content access in certain countries.
"The Country-Specific Route IP Transit service solves those issues by using virtual-route-forwarding (VRF) tables to separate different routes into different VRF routing tables. The country routes are distributed to country- specific routers. Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) communities are then used to control the routing between the main Internet routes, and different country VRF routes. The result is a service that ensures performance between different countries, allowing ISPs/CSPs to ensure the optimal user experience for their subscribers," Simpson added.
