Arkema Inc. and Univar USA's Performance Polymers Division Sign Agreement

PHILADELPHIA, PA, January 17, 2008 -- Arkema Inc. announced that its Technical Polymers division has signed a sales representation and distribution agreement with the Performance Polymers division of Univar USA to help meet the expanding need in the U.S. for engineered microporous membranes used by water, chemical, pharmaceutical, medical, food, and semiconductor industries, as well as municipalities.

Dependable, high-performance membranes are increasingly required in chemical reprocessing and recovery to minimize liquid discharge and increase recovery of precious metals. Membranes are also used in other chemical operations to reduce costs, maintain quality, or meet demanding environmental regulations.

Kynar® PVDF microporous membranes are already widely used in medical, food, power, chemical, paint and semiconductor processes. New and growing applications in potable water and waste management have substantially increased the demand for PVDF membranes in flat sheet and hollow fiber constructions.

"Univar is specially organized to sell to the membrane manufacturing industry and adding Kynar® PVDF to its product line and services business further enhances the offering that Univar already has established in this growing industry," said Cecil Lancaster, new business development manager for Univar's engineering plastics. Univar also offers polysulfone and polyether sulfone resins, specialty solvents, and clean-up services to membrane manufacturers.

Kynar® PVDF and Kynar Flex® PVDF are best known for excellent overall chemical resistance across a wide pH range (<1 - 13.5) and able to withstand chlorinated and brominated cleaning agents, strong acids, ozone and other oxidants. In addition to membranes, Kynar® PVDF is also used in piping systems, pumps, valves, tanks, flexible tubing, filter housings, nozzles, tower packing, and as a spray-applied coating for metal surfaces.

To complement the already broad offering of polymers for membrane applications, Arkema Inc. has recently added higher-molecular-weight Kynar® PVDF grades tailored for membrane production. Performance Polymers will offer these grades, known as Kynar® RC 10217 and Kynar® RC 10220, along with Kynar® 761, Kynar® 461 and Kynar Flex® 2801-00. Many Kynar® resin grades for membrane applications are offered in both pellet or powder form, depending on the needs of the customer.
