Alltech Goes

[Senta, SERBIA] - Alltech has opened a state-of-the art energy generation facility in Senta, Serbia. The new plant encompasses many cutting edge technologies and instead of using conventional fuel, it uses the waste from the yeast factory as a raw material. This waste is converted into biogas which is used to power the new co-generation plant. Co-generation combines heat and power generation. Burning biogas in a co-generation unit achieves important ecological effects: cutting down on harmful gas emissions. This plant is the first of its kind in Serbia and one of the first in Europe.

The combustion of the biogas will reduce the usage of natural gas by 3,250,000 Nm3 per year; this is approximately 37% of the present requirements. In addition to contributing to the facility's gas needs, the co-generation plant will contribute approximately 34% of the electrical needs. The hot water from the co-generation plant is used to heat various processes in the plant.

Jack O' Shea, Alltech, manager of the project commented, "Benefits of this system include: low energy consumption; no carbon source required for denitrification and more Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) available for biogas production; and lower excess sludge production in the aerobic stage and lower consumption of polyelectrolyte for sludge dewatering."

There are five technologies in the new process, anaerobic treatment, aerobic treatment, nitrogen removal, phosphate removal and sulphur removal from the biogas. The nitrogen removal process, referred to as DEAMON, uses novel bacteria to effectively remove the nitrogen from the waste. Virtually no energy or carbon is needed for this process.

Dr. Pearse Lyons, president of Alltech said, "[t]oday is a win-win day for Alltech Serbia and the Serbian nation as a whole. This plant will become the benchmark for similar solutions for not just Serbia but for the rest of Europe." He added, "Alltech has installed a valuable, efficient and sustainable solution to dealing with waste while at the same time producing renewable energy using innovative and ground breaking technologies."
