AIA Unveils Digital Practice Documents

Two new standard forms address concerns over digital data transmission

Washington, D.C., May 4, 2007 - The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has moved one step closer to an entirely digital future with the release of two new standard form contracts, C106(TM)-2007, Digital Data Licensing Agreement, and E201(TM)-2007, Digital Data Protocol Exhibit. The new AIA documents address a major concern in the design and construction industry: transmitting data in a digital working environment and maintaining control over its future use.

The 2007 AIA digital practice documents address the needs of both the party transmitting data and the one receiving it, without relying on disclaimers of responsibility. The documents allow contracting parties to share digital data in accordance with agreed-upon protocols for transmission, format and data use. Using the 2007 AIA digital practice documents should eliminate some of the fear and trepidation associated with information sharing.

"As the AIA leads the design and construction industry toward a more integrated practice environment, these documents represent a tangible step in that direction," said Suzanne Harness, Esq., Managing Director, AIA Contract Documents. "Recognizing that the world is changing quickly, the AIA is prepared to revise the 2007 digital data documents as often as necessary to ensure that they remain current with new technologies and industry practices."
