Aerojet Demonstrates New Rocket Propulsion for Ship-Based Gun Launchers

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Jan. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Aerojet, a GenCorp Inc. (NYSE:GY) company, recently conducted a series of successful gun-launched projectile tests that incorporated Aerojet range-extension rocket motors.

Two short-burn rocket motors and four igniter test vehicles were successfully gun-fired to prove that the rocket propulsion system could be operated successfully in the gun-launch environment.

Aerojet was supported by Raytheon and BAE Systems for the test demonstration. BAE Systems provided the gun platform. Raytheon provided the base and tail-fin assembly along with projectile system engineering integration. The tests were conducted in Socorro, N.M.

The recent successful test of this new rocket propulsion system for use on U.S. Army and Naval guns positions Aerojet as a supplier for this technically-challenging product, said Aerojet President Scott Neish. Aerojet is now a proven supplier of this technology. We look forward to working with the Government and prime contractor community in an effort to deliver rocket-range-extension technology for gun projectiles to our Warfighters.
