Advantages of Silicones Subject of Structural Sealant Webinar

MIDLAND, MI: Dave Kimball, Dow Corning construction field application technical specialist will discuss the advantages of silicone sealants for structural sealant glazing applications in a webinar April 28 from 10-11:30 a.m. (EDT).

The webinar will be co-hosted by the Sealant, Waterproofing & Restoration Institute, (SWR Institute) and the Adhesive & Sealant Council (ASC).

Kimball will discuss the process of adhering glass and panels to metal framing systems using high quality silicone sealants and examine criteria for using a structural sealant glazing system, compatibility testing, installation quality control issues, architectural design, and other post construction and remedial work applications. These topics will be particularly relevant for architects involved in commercial and residential building design, contractors that utilize glass and metal materials in building projects, and other individuals with a general interest in structural sealant glazing applications.

Compared to other types of sealants, the chemical structure of silicone gives it superior adhesion and compatibility to a wide variety of building substrates, such as ceramic, glass, plastic and metal. Silicones also remain unaffected by weather and climate extremes - rain, snow, humidity, ozone, temperature extremes, or UV rays - that can greatly damage the aesthetics and durability of a building structure.

"Since its inception in the 1960s, silicone sealant technology continues to create new possibilities for architects, designers, engineers, commercial and residential building contractors," said Kimball. "This allows buildings to incorporate more artistic three-dimensional glass curtain wall designs without sacrificing the strength, stability, and longevity of traditional mechanical fasteners."
