Thermistors withstand lead free soldering reflow up to 260°C.

Press Release Summary:

Enabling over-current protection, PRG21/18 positive temperature coefficient (PTC)
thermistor series has operating temperature range of -40°C to +105°C. Available in 0603 and 0805 sizes, units allow for resin coating, with adjacent component, for thermal sensing and protection. They can be used with LEDs to control current to dynamically verse typical resistor, and can also provide over-current protection for HEV/EV batteries.

Murata's New PTC Series Enables Over-Current Protection

PRG21/18 Thermistors Enable Significant Development Process Cost Savings

Smyrna, GA, October 20, 2008 - MurataElectronics North America, a world-leading innovator in electronics and thelargest global supplier of ceramic passive components, today announced thelaunch of the PRG21/18 positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor series for over-current protection. While there are other polymer PTC's available on the market today, they do not have high reliability levels or the ability to significantly reduce board space. Murata's PRG series not only achieves these features, but lays the groundwork for automotive design engineers to cut system development costs. The series allows for resin coating, with an adjacent component, for greater thermal sensing and protection of this component. The thermistors can also be used with LEDs to control current to dynamically verse a typical resistor, and it can also provide over-current protection for HEV/EV batteries.

ThePRG21/18 series is available in both 0603 and 0805 sizes, the latter of which is the smallest on the market. Further, PTC protection circuits are easy to implement and can be quickly interfaced to a microcontroller. They have no hysteresis, so they can also be used as resettable fuses. Finally, the series has the ability to withstand lead free soldering reflow up to 260°C and has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +105°C.

"At Murata, we are always pushing to provide the most advanced, flexible andcost effective solutions for automotive design engineers," stated Mitch Nozaki,Product Manager. "To achieve lower PTC resistance, we developed the world's first ceramic multilayer PTC thermistor. This development will allow forgreater current handling while maintaining small package sizes."

Samples are available for $0.12 to $0.15 per thermistor.Lead time is approximately one to three weeks. Additional purchasing info can be found online at www.murata-northamerica.com.
