Emerson Introduces New Sterilizable PUR-Sense (TM) pH Sensor Setting a New Standard for Stability, Assuring Greater Reliability and Reduced Maintenance

Up to five times greater sensor stability than any other pH sensor, assuring more reliable measurements and reduced maintenance for pharmaceutical manufacturers

Irvine, Calif., September 11, 2008 -- A new autoclavable and steam-sterilizable pH sensor designed for exceptional stability in life science applications has been announced by Emerson Process Management. The unparalleled performance of the Rosemount Analytical(R) PUR-Sense(TM) 3800 translates into sensor stability that is as much as five times greater than any other pH sensor previously available. For pharmaceutical manufacturers, this assures more reliable measurements and significantly reduced maintenance.

In simulated cell-culture process, the PUR-Sense(TM) 3800 exhibited sensor drift below 0.1 pH after an autoclave of 125oC for 45 minutes. Additional testing showed continued sensor life after more than 30 autoclave cycles or 50 steam cycles. Emerson has worked closely with customers to assure maximum effectiveness of the PUR-Sense in challenging pharmaceutical applications.

"In pharmaceutical processes, there is no such thing as too much stability," said John Wright, vice president, Emerson Process Management, Rosemount Analytical Liquid. "We have worked with our customers in this field to create new standards of stability for our sensors and we're developing customized solutions to meet individual requirements."

The reliability and stability of PUR-Sense 3800 in high heat is based upon the unique Emerson PERpH-X(R) and AccuGlass(R) technologies. High temperature can cause deterioration of a pH glass sensing membrane. The AccuGlass pH bulb addresses this issue and resists cracking and aging while exhibiting near theoretical response even at extreme pH values. The PUR-Sense reference electrode uses a novel silver-silver chloride-based reference electrode in combination with a new gelled potassium chloride electrolyte to provide a stable reference potential through the single proprietary ceramic reference junction.

The PUR-Sense Model 3800 provides an individual quality certification with calibration records and list of wetted materials for each sensor. The sensor is available in three different insertion lengths: 120mm, 225mm and 325mm. The 3800VP has a PT100 ohm RTD mounted inside the pH glass stem for automatic temperature compensation.
