Akros Silicon Introduces Industry's First PoE Powered Device Platform with Integrated GreenEdge 2kV Isolation

The AS1854 is a highly efficient, integrated and cost-effective Power SoC solution that enables network-based energy management features for "green" enterprise

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - May 18, 2009 - Akros Silicon Inc . today announced the AS1854, the industry's first Power over Ethernet (PoE), Power System-on-a-Chip (Power SoC) with 2kV integrated isolation for the next generation of IP appliances such as IP phones, IP cameras, wireless access points (WAP), Thin Client terminals, and WiMAX CPEs. Built around Akros' patented GreenEdge(TM) digital isolation technology, the AS1854 eliminates low-speed, bulky opto-couplers and integrates functionality of up to nine separate ICs used in current solutions, including a third-generation IEEE 802.3af/at PD controller and quad-output digital power DC-DC converters. The result is a cost-effective PoE and power management solution in a single package that substantially reduces design footprint and bill-of-material. It delivers superior DC-DC efficiency and enables direct digital management of both isolated primary-side power and secondary-side system power for real-time, end-to-end "green" power applications.

The AS1854 features cross-isolation DC-DC timing management and digital power control that delivers higher DC-DC efficiency across the range of light- to full-load conditions. With seamless communication between the primary and secondary power domains, the AS1854 implements many advance diagnostic features and high-voltage telemetry features. This enables remote power management and IT servicing of devices, therefore reducing IT "truck rolls" and service costs for end customers. Now OEMs can design a wide range of cost-effective and value-added products to capitalize on energy-efficiency market trends.

"Energy management plays an increasingly integral role in IT services, with a tremendous demand from enterprises to reduce energy consumption and to extend intelligence of remote network management to power subsystems," said Parviz Ghaffaripour, CEO of Akros Silicon. "The new AS1854's GreenEdge isolation technology enables complete remote monitoring and control of IP appliance power subsystems, making network-based energy management a practical reality. The AS18x4 products allow our customers to create a value-added and differentiated feature set in a cost-effective manner-and to pass on the recurring energy-saving benefits to their end customers."

The AS1854 is part of the AS18x4 product family, which includes the AS1854, AS1844, AS1834 and AS1824. These devices offer a complete range of high-end to low-end and high-power (PoE Plus, IEEE 802.3at-pre) to low-power (IEEE 802.3af) products that meet diverse product line requirements and provide substantial cost savings. AS18x4 products are available in footprint-compatible, 64-pin 9x9 QFN, Reduction of Hazardous Substance (RoHS)-compliant packages. Akros offers complete reference designs, evaluation boards, graphical user interface (GUI) evaluation software and design documentation. AS18x4 products are shipping in pre-production quantities to early access customers. Device pricing is available upon request.
