DDL offers Sutherland Rub Testing capabilities.
Press Release Summary:
July 25, 2014 - Used to meet requirements of testing standards such as ASTM’s D5264, Sutherland Rub Testing determines durability and abrasion resistance of printed materials that may be impacted by shipping conditions, temperature/humidity, and time. Test is performed by attaching label to device while similar sample label is attached to weight. After 2 samples are rubbed against one another at controlled speed for predetermined number of cycles, samples are visually inspected to see if ink has worn off.

DDL Adds Sutherland Rub Testing to its Core Capabilities
Press release date: July 24, 2014
“The Sutherland Rub Test is the industry standard used to determine the amount of scuff or abrasion damage that may occur to printed materials during shipment, storage, or handling. This damage could result in a significant degradation in the appearance and legibility of label information,” said Amy Peterson, Lab Manager, DDL Product & Materials division. “The addition of this test complements the wide range of other package, materials and product testing DDL already offers its customers to help comply with ASTM, ISTA, ISO and other accepted industry standards.”
The Sutherland Rub Test is a simple procedure that can be used to compare different inks, coatings, laminates and substrates for their comparative abrasion resistance or to establish performance benchmarks. The legibility of printed materials is very important for packaging of medical device and pharmaceutical products in particular. The test is performed by attaching a label to the device while a similar sample label is attached to a weight. The two samples are then rubbed against one another at a controlled speed for a predetermined number of cycles. Once the rubbing stops the samples are visually inspected to see if the ink has worn off or not.
