Amphenol Integrates Radsok(R) Socket Design With P-lok(R) Connectors For Higher Amperage, Lower Milli-Volt Drop

Sidney, NY, November 2001 - Amphenol Industrial Operations has integrated its RADSOK® socket technology into its P-lok® connectors, a positive locking, spring loaded coupling. The enhanced series of connectors can now handle up to 150% higher amperages, while providing lower milli-volt drops and a more favorable temperature rise.

The size 8 American Wire Gauge (AWG) P-lok contacts now handle currents up to 69 amps while size 4 AWG will handle up to 120 amps. The thermal rise data after 500 cycles of durability is as follows:

Size 8 AWG socket: 380C @ 46 amps and 780C @ 69 amps
Size 4 AWG socket: 210C @ 80 amps and 47°C @120 amps.

High current circuits can now be incorporated into the same connector with lower power and/or signal circuits. The following insert patterns are recommended for use with the RADSOK sockets installed into P-lok connectors with mixed signal and current applications:

2 circuit patterns: shell size/insert pattern 20-23, 22-1, 24-9
3 circuit patterns: shell size/insert pattern 16-7, 20-19, 22-2,
28-3, 28-6
4 circuit patterns: shell size/insert pattern 18-13, 20-24,
22-4, 22-22, 24-22
5 circuit patterns: shell size/insert pattern 20-14, 22-12,
24-12, 28-5
6 circuit patterns: shell size/insert pattern 20-8, 20-22,
7 circuit patterns: shell size/insert pattern 24-10, 24-16, 28-10
9 circuit patterns: shell size/insert pattern 22-27, 24-11, 28-1
10 circuit patterns: shell size/insert pattern 24-21

The patented RADSOK socket technology uses several equally spaced, longitudinal beams twisted into a hyperbolic shape, a design based on a hyperbolic grid configuration. As a male pin is inserted, the grid deflects, imparting high normal forces.
The hyperbolic stamped grid configuration ensures a large, coaxial, face-to-face surface area engagement resulting in a low milli-volt drop connection with a low insertion force.

The stamped grid and cylinder are very rugged, allowing for a high quantity of insertion cycles and off-axis insertion. Highly automated manufacturing processes result in this premium performance, competitively priced barrel terminal.

The P-lok connectors' "Push-Pull" system, similar to the coupling used in pneumatic hose connections, creates a positive lock through a spring loaded coupling ring on the plug, and stainless steel ball bearings on the receptacle. Environmentally sealed to IP65 specification levels, P-lok connectors feature front and rear o-ring seals and gaskets as well as compression grommets designed to seal on the cable jacket.

A wide variety of connector hardware and strain relief options for this series is also offered. Plugs can be made with male or female contacts and straight or right angle cable adapters (including basket weave), available with or without compression
grommets. Receptacles are also made with male or female contacts, panel mount or in-line styles with the same cable adapter and strain relief options as the plug.

Pricing for a P-lok connector with RADSOK socket technology starts at $44.00 for a three-circuit receptacle in quantities of 50 or more pieces. Delivery is 8 weeks ARO.
