HCI(TM) Connector System Addresses Increasing Current Density Demands

ETTERS, PA (January 29, 2007) - FCI, a leading developer of connectors and interconnect
systems, has developed the HCI(TM) connector system in response to increasing system power
requirements that are driving the need for improved current density. The connector design integrates both power and signal contacts to provide capability for both power distribution and power control in a single connector. A single HCI(TM) power contact accommodates a maximum of 85 amps based on 30oC temperature-rise with zero airflow. This makes the system ideal for high-wattage power supplies, servers, storage enclosures, communications equipment and hotswap redundant N+1 power distribution systems.

"In addition to providing a low product height to minimize obstruction to airflow, the touch-proof HCI housing includes vents to aid heat dissipation," said Scott Kleinle, Global Power Solutions Manager for FCI. "The housing permits airflow through the connector by providing vents above the signal field as well as vents above the power contacts that permit airflow away from the mated interfaces and along the entire length of the contacts."

Building on FCI's proven PwrBlade® connector system, the industry standard for DC power
supply interfaces and power distribution, the HCI connector family is ideal for designers looking to maximize linear current density without increased board real estate. Like the PwrBlade connectors, the HCI system provides capability for both power and signal contacts in a single connector to enable power distribution and control. The connectors also feature molded guides to assure proper alignment during blind mating.

The connectors employ stamped-and-formed power contacts, initially pioneered by FCI with its PwrBlade system, as a cost-effective alternative to expensive screw-machined contacts for highcurrent applications.

HCI connectors are available for either perpendicular or coplanar board-to-board configurations. The HCI connector system features a flexible, expandable product platform and tooling, which provides for variation in the number and placement of signal and power contacts within the molded housing. In addition, the connector system complies with the hard-metric (12.5mm daughtercard-to-backplane spacing) equipment practice and is stackable with FCI's AirMax VS® product offering.
