BMC Software Announces PATROL(R) Analytics; Improving IT Availability and Responsiveness By Reducing False System Alarms

HOUSTON, Feb. 7 -- BMC Software, Inc. (NYSE:BMC), a leading provider of enterprise management solutions, today announced the availability of PATROL(R) Analytics -- self-learning behavioral analysis software that automatically generates dynamic real-time thresholds, allowing IT to resolve problems faster, increase system availability and maximize employee productivity. PATROL Analytics leverages the deep management understanding of the PATROL product line to give customers the system-wide visibility, insight and control required for the proactive system management that drives IT and business alignment. In enabling that alignment, PATROL Analytics is a key capability in BMC Software's Business Service Management (BSM) strategy, which enables customers to manage IT from a business perspective.

IT environments are continuously evolving, making it nearly impossible for IT to accurately set static thresholds and avoid false alarms that stretch IT staff resources. PATROL Analytics, based on technology licensed from Netuitive, eliminates these challenges by allowing organizations to set alerting thresholds dynamically so that IT is warned only when business services are truly impacted. Through Trusted Alarms(TM), problems can be reported and personnel notified before those problems result in service degradation or outages.

"This product can completely automate our threshold management and only delivers alerts which are system-verified as actionable. We save staff time each day and can proactively manage service levels in a way that was not possible before," says David Stinson, Network Management and IT Resource at Oklahoma Heart Hospital. "Our investment payback was nearly instant and allows more resources to be applied directly to patient care."

"This technology enables us to manage our environment much more proactively using PATROL," says Rodney Hardy, principal engineer, Enterprise Management, XM Satellite Radio. "It dramatically reduces the number of alerts we receive and pinpoints the ones needing our attention. We cherish the resulting ability to go back and look at the performance indicators behind a Trusted Alarm."

PATROL Analytics works by continuously analyzing and correlating real-time system metrics from dozens of enterprise resources to determine typical behavioral patterns and then automatically determines the appropriate associated alerting thresholds. In addition to determining appropriate thresholds, key benefits of PATROL Analytics include:

o Eliminating false alerts: With its behavioral analytics, false alerts are minimized. By escalating only system-verified alarms, PATROL Analytics eliminates 99.5 percent of the false alarms resulting from manually set static alerting thresholds, reducing the overall volume of alerts, pages and trouble tickets. This allows IT to more easily and efficiently recognize and react to alarms or abnormal system behavior.

o Increasing productivity with automated thresholding: PATROL Analytics eliminates expensive and time-consuming manual threshold administration by automatically generating dynamic thresholds for each server. Dynamic thresholds ensure that alerting thresholds automatically and dynamically track application behavioral changes.

o Allowing faster problem diagnosis and repair: PATROL Analytics has the ability to correlate recently observed behavior and uses the information to anticipate potential degradations up to two hours in advance of potential issues. To diagnose the problem, PATROL Analytics' alarm messages use explicit information to describe a system issue; so all levels of IT can understand the trouble tickets and escalate issues appropriately. The alarms also can be routed to a central PATROL console for immediate viewing.

"BMC Software is dedicated to providing our customers with the broadest and deepest management solutions to meet their complex IT management needs. Dynamic thresholding through behavioral analytics with PATROL Analytics is a key enabling technology that is keeping our solutions comprehensive while simplifying operations for our customers," said Mary Smars, vice president and general manager, Distributed Systems Management, BMC Software. "PATROL Analytics is a valuable addition for our customers, increasing their ability to proactively manage their IT environments and continue on the path to IT and business alignment."
