Alert Delivery System detects and directs warnings.

Press Release Summary:

PlantWeb(R) Alerts deliver alert and user support guidance triggered by diagnostics from Emerson intelligent field devices. They prioritize measurement, final control deterioration, or fault conditions, and selectively warn maintenance personnel/operators. Alerts are presented via AMS and DeltaV(TM) digital automation system, and are identified as predictive, maintenance, or failure alert.

Emerson Launches PlantWeb(R) Alerts to Deliver Predictive Maintenance with Custom Instructions

AUSTIN, TX (February 21, 2002) - Emerson Process Management has announced the availability of PlantWeb Alerts supported by various Emerson FOUNDATION(TM) fieldbus devices that are components of PlantWeb digital plant architecture. PlantWeb alerts deliver unique alert and user support guidance triggered by diagnostics from the Emerson intelligent field devices.

The PlantWeb Alerts lead to increased process availability and reduced down time through their ability to prioritize measurement or final control deterioration or fault conditions and selectively warn maintenance personnel and operators. PlantWeb Alerts are exclusively developed, delivered and presented via the combination of Emerson's intelligent field devices, AMS and the DeltaV(TM) digital automation system.

Today's intelligent field devices continue to improve plant efficiency by providing self-checking and fault diagnostics for themselves, their process connections and their environment. Proper delivery of the information is key since plant operators have warned that they are in danger of becoming overloaded with alarms. Emerson FOUNDATION fieldbus devices with alerts capability uniquely categorize and prioritize the new information, and generate the alerts that are separate and distinct from process alarms. PlantWeb Alerts speed the right information to the right person. Maintenance receives information to correctly identify and fix current or predicted problems while operations personnel receive the information only if it could affect plant operation.

PlantWeb Alerts are identified as predictive alert, maintenance alert, or failure alert, each with recommended actions. The predictive alerts allow maintenance to address a problem BEFORE it impacts operations. With ever improving predictive diagnostics most alerts should be of this type. The alerts are presented to maintenance personnel as an aid to maintenance planning. For example, a Fisher DVC5000f digital valve controller generates an advisory alert when a valve has cycled a certain number of times. Maintenance personnel use this alert to schedule further diagnostics or check the valve for wear. Since this advisory does not impact plant operation, it is not sent to the operator.

The maintenance alert indicates a malfunction has occurred (or is about to occur), and what the effects might be. For example, the plugged impulse line detection in the Rosemount 3051f pressure transmitter would generate a maintenance alert, indicating that a valid process variable is no longer available.

Maintenance alerts are sent to both plant personnel and control operations using DeltaV. Maintenance uses the alert, together with diagnostic and repair data from AMS to determine corrective actions. Plant operators use this alert to determine the possible effect on plant process measurement and safety. The urgency of the repair can be assessed by the operator and priority allocated for maintenance attention. With this information, maintenance knows the priority requested, the location of the problem equipment, and what tools or parts are needed. This speeds maintenance response and reduces the cost of repair.

The failure alert indicates a failure has occurred which renders the device inoperative. Maintenance personnel use the AMS information screens to show the parts and procedures required for repairing the failure. Operators use the information to keep the plant in a safe operating condition.

With PlantWeb Alerts now released, new opportunities for improved and efficient equipment monitoring and process control are made available. Various intelligent FOUNDATION fieldbus devices from Emerson support PlantWeb Alerts today. The capability will be embedded into future versions of field devices offering more advanced fault diagnosis, ensuring that process plants perform at optimum efficiency. PlantWeb Alerts will lead to plants with less downtime, higher efficiency, with fewer delays imposed onto production schedules.
