October 2, 2008 - Suited for situations requiring multi-point measurement and tracking of pressure, XGS-600(TM) can operate, display, and process readings from hot filament and cold cathode high-vacuum gauges (including ultra high vacuum) as well as convection roughing gauges. Unit comes in half-rack package and communicates readings/status via serial communications and set-point outputs. Used for data logging and controlling other system elements, solution has signal response less than 20 msec.

New Flexible Vacuum Controller from Varian, Inc. is Expandable and Easy to Use

PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 22 -- Varian, Inc. (NasdaqGS: VARI) announced today its new high-performance, high-capacity vacuum gauge rack controller that provides cost effective monitoring and control of multiple roughing, high vacuum and ultra high vacuum gauges in a standard half-rack package. The XGS-600(TM) replaces Varian's widely used controllers, the MultiGauge(TM) and SenTorr(TM) and requires from 50 to 75% less rack space than other controllers.

For systems and end-users that require multi-point measurement and tracking of pressure, the XGS-600 can operate, display and process readings from hot filament and cold cathode high vacuum gauges (including UHV), as well as convection roughing gauges. For both data logging and controlling other elements of a system, the XGS-600 can instantly communicate pressure readings and status via its standard serial communications and set-point outputs.

Three general groups of applications exist for the XGS-600 controller: laboratory environments where vacuum systems are used, large research facilities such as accelerators or synchrotrons, and systems or OEM equipment that employ vacuum systems within. Using state-of-the-art signal processing electronics, the XGS-600 features fast signal response of less than 20 msec while still allowing users to simultaneously operate up to twelve convection type gauges or up to four hot filament or cold cathode gauges combined with four convection gauges in one unit.

A programmable dot matrix LCD displays up to 8 gauges at one time and can be configured to a font readable from 15 feet. Simple screen organization and navigation make the unit so easy-to-use that it can be operated without a manual.

"The XGS-600 is a cost competitive solution for controlling a small number of gauges, but it really shines when you need to add gauges," said Sergio Piras, Senior Vice President, Vacuum Technologies, Varian, Inc. "When more gauges are run, the value of the XGS-600 becomes markedly advantageous. Adding gauge cards to an XGS-600 can be accomplished in a few minutes and at a significant cost savings without having to worry about space and cabling requirements for another controller.
