Solvay Advanced Polymers Introduces New Transparent High-Temperature Polymer

Totally new ultra-performance polymer offers highest heat resistance of any transparent amorphous thermoplastic polymer

Alpharetta, GA - A totally new transparent high-temperature sulfone polymer, SUPRADELâ„¢ HTS, is being introduced by Solvay Advanced Polymers, L.L.C. at the K2004 International Trade Fair, Hall 6 Stand D76, October 20-27, 2004 in Dusseldorf, Germany. With a glass transition temperature of 265°C (509°F) and a heat deflection temperature of 255°C (491°F), this new aromatic sulfone polymer offers the highest heat resistance of any transparent amorphous thermoplastic polymer commercially available today.

SUPRADELâ„¢ HTS is the first totally new sulfone-based polymer to be introduced commercially in the last 15 years. "The material's unique combination of transparency, high heat resistance, and dimensional stability represents a technological breakthrough and makes it an important addition to our line of ultra-performance polymers,'" said Doug Brademeyer, global business manager for Solvay Advanced Polymers. Brademeyer added that the polymer has been produced in commercial quantities.

Properties

SUPRADELâ„¢ HTS offers the highest glass transition temperature of any fully thermoplastic resin commercially available today. This exceptional thermal performance is available along with other performance features traditionally associated with sulfone polymers. These features include good strength, stiffness, and dielectric properties over a wide temperature range; resistance to hydrolysis by hot water and steam; excellent resistance to acids and bases; and inherent flammability resistance.

Distinct Among Ultra-Performance Polymers

SUPRADELâ„¢ HTS offers a distinct advantage over many polyimides because it can be melt processed, which offers better manufacturing economics than solution casting or compression molding. SUPRADELâ„¢ HTS also provides significant performance advantages over thermoplastic polyimides, which include resistance to bases, improved melt stability during fabrication, and a robust amorphous chemical structure that is capable of holding tight dimensional tolerances.

Applications

SUPRADELâ„¢ HTS can be processed by conventional thermoplastic techniques, including injection molding, extrusion, and thermoforming. Because of its processing versatility and high heat resistance, SUPRADELâ„¢ HTS is a viable material in engineering applications having high-temperature requirements. This includes automotive, aerospace, electrical, electronic, and industrial product applications.

The material's thermal performance combined with its good strength and stiffness, dimensional stability, and creep resistance opens the door to high-temperature injection molding applications that traditionally have been limited to filled, semi-crystalline polymers, such as glass-filled PEEK. SUPRADELâ„¢ HTS is expected to offer improved dimensional control relative to glass-filled PEEK for applications having complex part geometries or tight dimensional tolerances. The performance characteristics mentioned above combined with the material's good processing economics also make SUPRADELâ„¢ HTS a good candidate for metal replacement.

New Polymer Strengthens Company's Leadership Position

SUPRADELâ„¢HTS is a strategic addition to the company's line of ultra-performance polymers, which include TORLON® polyamide-imide and KADEL® aromatic polyketone. It also expands its broad portfolio of high-performance sulfone polymers, which include RADEL® R polyphenylsulfone, ACUDEL® polyphenylsulfone blends, RADEL® A polyethersulfone, UDEL® polysulfone, and MINDEL® polysulfone blends.
