Waverly, Nebraska-National Crane Corporation, American's truck-mounted hydraulic crane leader and a Grove Worldwide Company, has introduced its new Seriesl400H telescoping crane.
The Series 1400H, a behind-the-cab mounted machine, is rated with a maximum capacity of 33 tons at a 6-ft (1.83 m) radius. Two booms are available with the Series 1400H - a 100-ft, four-section boom with a 30'-54' (9.14-16.46-m) pull-out jib, and a 127-foot five-section boom with a 30-ft (9.14-m) single-section jib. National's synchronous boom extension system efficiently distributes boom weight and maximizes reach by telescoping proportionally. National's specially formulated polymer paint (patent pending) with easy glide wear pads provides a smooth telescoping and retracting function.
Maximum vertical hydraulic reach is 137 ft (41.76 m), with a maximum total vertical reach of 167 ft (50.90 m). Behind-cab crane mounting allows for a 22-ft (6.7 m) cargo deck for extensive materials-handling capabilities.
The Series 1400H was created to fill a gap in National Crane's product line, according to Lyle Jacobson, Telescoping Product Manager. "The 1400H provides a lower priced option to the Series 1500, which has a 36-ton capacity, but provides more capacity than the 30-ton Series 1300. The Series 1400H fits nicely into an area that will benefit such users as utility contractors and crane service companies. It also provides some features that other cranes in this class simply cannot offer."
Roadability is also a big benefit of the Series 1400H, according to Jacobson. "This crane, on a standard chassis, is road-legal without special permits, allowing it to go anywhere, any time without the added complications of special transport arrangements," he says.
The Series 1400H mounts on a standard commercial tandem rear axle truck and can be equipped with a variety of accessories, including personnel baskets to accommodate up to two people.
A new main control valve with calibrated spools provides smooth hydraulic operation. The 1400H's Speedy-reeve boom tip with three lower sheaves and new Speedy-reeve one sheave block allows reeving of from one to three parts of line, simply by pulling four pins.
The main outrigger span of 24-ft 6-in (7.47-m) and rear stabilizer span of 18-ft 6-in (5.99 m), with 24-in diameter pads, provide excellent stability on virtually any terrain. The Series 1400H also provides an optional mid-span outrigger chart at 18.5 ft (5.64 m).
Load Moment Indicator (LMI) and Anti-Two-Block (ATB) systems are standard on the Series 1400H. The weather-proof PAT Model DS 160 LMI provides the operator with a continuous reading of available capacity as it makes a lift. When the load capacity is approached, a caution light illuminates on the LMI console; when full capacity is reached, an audio/visual alarm warns the operator to take corrective action and the LMI deactivates functions that could contribute to an overload. The system automatically adjusts when the overload is relieved, allowing the resumed use of all crane functions. The ATB shuts down functions that can cause two-blocking when a winch cable attachment contacts a switch below the sheave case, either by winching up or by extending the boom without paying out cable.
One of National's innovative features standard on the Series 1400H is internal anti-two-block wiring (patent pending), which routes the ATB system wiring through the inside of the boom. This eliminates the potential of damage to the wire caused by contact with tree limbs, structures or other physical hazards during operation.
