New SpicerŪ Tandem Axles Bring Fleets Dramatically Reduced Weight with Proven Reliability
LOUISVILLE, Ky., -- Today Dana Holding Corporation (NYSE: DAN) introduced a new family of heavy-duty 40,000-pound tandem drive axles. The new SpicerŪ Pro-40(TM) axle is designed to offer fleets a reliable, lightweight, and competitively priced alternative to current available axles for linehaul, bulk, regional and city delivery vehicles.
"Rising fuel prices and incremental weight due to governmental regulations continue to spur the need for lightweight alternatives," said Steve Slesinski, director of product planning at Dana. "When every pound counts the new Pro-40(TM) addresses the needs of weight sensitive customers with the most optimized 40,000-pound tandem available."
The Spicer Pro-40 offers a dramatic weight reduction and improved power density, which enables customers to increase payload, improve fuel economy, and ultimately improve their bottom line. The axle is more than 120 pounds lighter than the nearest competitive axle, and 100 pounds lighter than the current Dana Spicer DS404.
Planned availability with a popular range of ratios from (3.25- 3.90), the Spicer Pro-40 axle represents the ideal specification for commercial trucks with 9-, 10-, 12-, or 13-speed overdrive transmissions; diesel engines rated up to 475-horsepower and 1750 lb-ft. of torque; and Gross Combination Weight Ratings up to 80,000 pounds.
"Traditional 40,000-pound axles are designed to meet a huge variety of application requirements, which has left the majority of the primary line-haul segment over-spec'd and overweight," said Slesinski. "For fleets with predictable duty-cycles, the Pro-40 delivers all the features that are required without the added weight."
Like all Dana 40,000-pound axles, the Spicer Pro-40 is approved with 2-inch outset wheels with optional 11 mm wall housing, and is planned to be available for initial shipments later this year.
