June 28, 2007 - Consisting of OpVista2000 TR-110 GbE muxponder, TR-71 10GbE transponder, and Layer 2 functionality, EtherWave(TM) meets network requirements for Ethernet architectural and operational efficiency by combining 10 GbE client side signals into one 10-G ITU-compliant DWDM wavelength on network side. OpVista can handoff 10GbE signal to router located in central office or hub node facility, with individual GbE streams tagged separately to allow distribution to appropriate service.

OpVista Introduces 'EtherWave(TM)' to Help Carriers Dramatically Reduce the Cost of 'GbE' Aggregation and Distribution

Latest Addition to OpVista's 'nWave' Carrier Ethernet Transport Solution Increases Fiber Efficiency and Eliminates the Need for Expensive Edge Routers

MILPITAS, Calif., June 11 /-- OpVista today announced the "EtherWave(TM)" solution, designed to lower the cost of aggregating Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) traffic streams into a cost-effective 10 GbE handoff on metro and regional backbone networks. EtherWave will debut next week in "live" network simulations at the NXTComm and SCTE Cable Tec Expo conferences and exhibitions in Chicago and Orlando, respectively. The EtherWave solution is generally available and shipping to customers in July 2007.

To emphasize the advanced network applications made possible by combining EtherWave with "layer 3" network equipment, OpVista is teaming with leading Layer 3 networking companies for live network demonstrations in OpVista's booths at NXTComm (7415) and at Cable Tec Expo (2562), details of which to follow on June 18th.

The EtherWave solution, consisting of the OpVista2000 TR-110 GbE "muxponder" and the TR-71 10GbE transponder and incorporating Layer 2 functionality, represents an important addition to OpVista's nWave architecture for "carrier Ethernet transport" network infrastructure.

In today's environment, carriers can devote a fiber for each new application carried over a GbE, but the operations and management associated with this practice becomes expensive, and exhausts valuable fiber plant. An alternative solution involves multiplexing the individual multiple GbE streams carrying different applications into a single 10G pipe for transport across the network. At the edge, operators must then install a router to demultiplex the 10G pipe into its individual GbE streams. This approach also has proven expensive and has added unnecessary complexity into network management. Incorporating DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) to boost the capacity of each fiber solves the first "fiber centric" problem, but does not eliminate the need for a router at the edge of the network.

The EtherWave solution meets the increasingly important network requirements for Ethernet architectural and operational efficiency by combining 10 GbE "client side" signals into one 10-G ITU-compliant DWDM wavelength on the "network side." OpVista can then handoff a 10GbE signal to a router located in a central office or hub node facility, with the individual GbE streams tagged separately to allow distribution to the appropriate service. This cost-effective aggregation and segregation eliminates the need for a costly edge router.

"As competition for business customers intensifies, operators are looking for ways to improve their time to market and reduce CAPEX and OPEX costs. The EtherWave solution continues OpVista's leadership in infrastructure re-use and CAPEX and OPEX reduction by providing Layer 2 functionality to tag the individual GbE streams for distribution, thus eliminating some network elements normally required. As a result, OpVista's EtherWave solution delivers a large cost savings as well as lowering OPEX in the network, showing that they are one of most cost-effective solutions in this metro space," said Eve Griliches, Program Manager, Telecom Equipment of IDC.

About OpVista
The OpVista nWave Optical Networking platform turns existing network infrastructure into carrier Ethernet-ready networks easily and cost-effectively. Universally compatible with existing metro and regional DWDM systems and fiber plant, the nWave product family can quadruple the number of available wavelengths in order to meet exploding consumer and business demand for high-bandwidth video, such as HDTV, and IP-based services. Furthermore, using OpVista's unique optical multicasting solution, carriers can deliver bandwidth in single wavelength increments to any node at any time. As carriers make the transition to IP and Ethernet-based services, OpVista is there to help carriers realize greater revenue and reduce both operating and capital expenditures. OpVista is based in Milpitas, CA. For more information, visit http://opvista.com/.
