New Surge Protectors Help Indicate Ground Problems

The benefit of a properly designed and installed surge protection system is the mitigation of premature equipment failure and downtime. The new PowerTrip® PT-PM, PT-PB and PT-HW series suppressors are designed to meet the demanding protection requirements of equipment operating in Commercial and Industrial environments.

These suppressors are supplied, standard, with an audible alarm that sounds when protection is lost and have a counter that shows the number of transient events the suppressor has encountered. Front panels feature brightly colored LEDs that illuminate to demonstrate the status of each protected power phase.

The newest and most exciting feature of these PowerTrip® models is the ability to monitor the critical, neutral to ground, connection. If the unit's Yellow LED illuminates, it is an indication of a potentially hazardous system wiring fault. This does not signal a suppressor or transient alert. It warns that there may be dangerous neutral to ground voltage present in the grounding system. This new monitoring capability can become a very effective troubleshooting tool when units are installed at the main and branch panels.

A main panel or master control center can feed many branch panels or downstream circuitry. Ground fault problems can occur anywhere in this system. If allowed to reach critical fault, people and equipment can be seriously harmed.

By segmenting the internal distribution system with diagnostic PowerTrip® Surge Protection Devices, it may be possible to detect these ground faults more precisely. With PowerTrip® suppressors installed at each branch of the power system, ground faults can be more easily pinpointed to hardware or a specific grid segment, enhancing diagnostics, reliability and safety.

Power Systems are interconnected electrical grids, with machinery, hardware and other electrical devices feeding from them. Without suppressors to protect the individual devices on these grids, transient voltages can propagate throughout the electrical distribution system, causing damage. PowerTrip® suppressors are road blocks to these surges, stopping them from disrupting equipment and operations; saving companies the expense of replacing prematurely damaged equipment.
