Garrettcom Offers Substation-Hardened Router with Expanded Security and Connectivity Options

Magnum DX940 Combines with New SCP Substation-hardened Computing Platform to Support Secure Substation Management at the Heart of the Smart Grid

Tampa, Fla. - GarrettCom®, Inc.'s Magnum(TM) DX940 Substation Router expands the company's line of industrial routers with a powerful but compact product that is configurable with both 3G wireless and a full range of copper cable and fiber wireline ports. It is the first DX router to incorporate GarrettCom's port-module flexibility that offers a wide variety of configurations within the same router enclosure.

The new router will operate using Version 3.0 of GarrettCom's MNS-DX router software, which offers the kind of security features and richness expected in the power utility market in a substation-hardened package. The MNS-DX software offers high security and the broadest available range of IPsec/VPN standards, in the spirit of the Department of Energy's Lemnos project, to enable painless, secure interoperability at the router level throughout the Smart Grid.

Hardware

The versatile DX940 combines WAN access, IP routing, Ethernet(TM) switching, Serial-to-IP terminal services and advanced security features in a small-footprint industrial package suitable for small and mid-sized remote sites such as distribution
substations and transportation control pedestals. With 3G wireless capability, as well as configurable port options for 10/100 and 1Gb copper and fiber media, the DX940 supports secure access even where wireline is too difficult or too expensive to deploy.

Integration of wide-input auto-ranging power supplies and of telco-compatible CSU/DSU functionality into the base DX940 product further reduces space requirements and local wiring complexity. The DX940 meets IEEE 1613 and IEC 61850-3 specifications for EMI/ESD protection and operates at -40 to +85° C without fans or open vent holes. Hard metal packaging is standard and conformal coating is available.

The Magnum DX940 Industrial Router enables network connectivity to remote industrial sites using Digital WAN services such as DDS, TI/EI, frame relay, and IP-based VPN services. Serial-IP terminal services support RS232, RS485 and RS422 serial interfaces and protocols such as DNP, telnet and Modbus, including Modbus-ASCII/RTU to Modbus-TCP interworking.

Software

Version 3.0 of the MNS-DX software extends support of IPsec and VPN capabilities to include the broadest and most robust range of VPN support, including numerous proprietary extensions, available in an industrial router. For complete information on MNS-DX IPsec and VPN capabilities, see the technical brief "Secure Access with VPN Technology in Industrial Networks".

"With the release of this version of MNS-DX, we provide tested VPN interoperability with the widest variety of Enterprise routers, such as Cisco and Juniper, in a substation-hardened DX router," said Frank Madren, GarrettCom President.

MNS-DX software supports a wide range of cyber security capabilities covering both electronic perimeter protection for remote sites and management security for the DX line of routers themselves. The DX family provides a stateful IP firewall, IP address translation (NAT/PAT) and encryption options via IPsec, SSH port forwarding and serial port SSL VPNs, as well as various logging capabilities. DX management security
includes encrypted interfaces (HTTPS, SSH, SFTP, and SNMPv3), multi-level user IDs with strong form passwords, authentification via RADIUS, and extensive local and/or remote logging and alerting.

Advanced statistics and event recording are available with downloadable local logs, SNMP MIBs and traps, and syslog remote logging. A flexible integrated protocol analyzer provides remote trouble shooting and detailed traffic analysis.

Complements CrossBow(TM) Secure Access Management

The DX940 and other routers in the DX family interconnect with the company's new SCP substation-hardened computing platform, which supports secure local access and control in large substations and which is used in conjunction with a centralized CrossBow Secure Access Manager server to form an integrated, comprehensive secure access management solution within a distributed utility operation.
