W.A. Schmidt, Inc. Introduces Unique Split Column for Mezzanine Installation in Tight Spaces

SOUDERTON, PA (December 27, 2004) – W.A. Schmidt, Inc. has developed a new split column assembly for mezzanines that permits installations where overhead obstructions would otherwise interfere with the full column length. The advantages of WA Schmidt’s split column are: 1) it is easier to maneuver and lift in two half-size sections; and 2) it can be designed with openings at the bolted connections to permit obstructions such as sprinkler piping to pass through, eliminating the extensive cost of re-routing existing mechanical systems.

The design was originally created to solve specific issues at a Newark InOne electronics distribution facility in Gaffrey, NC in September 2003. In this case, a sprinkler system ran directly in the path of the column locations; also, tight spacing between the aisles prevented a full column from being raised.

This unique split column assembly is but one example of the type of innovative thinking the engineers at WA Schmidt apply to every unique challenge. Many times -- as in the case of Newark InOne -- when other manufacturers walk away from difficult jobs, WA Schmidt’s design team finds a way to make it work, saving the customer the cost and trouble of expensive alternatives.

W.A. Schmidt, Inc. designs and custom-engineers high quality wide-span and modular mezzanines plus a variety of other material handling products. Schmidt has completed more than 22,000 material handling equipment installations throughout North America and overseas.
