Speed Control DC Thrusters suit marine applications.
September 1, 2010 -
Side-Power SEP Series thrusters allow boaters to select power required based on weather and sea conditions. Units include power control unit and dual proportional control panel with backlit LCD display. Main components are linked together via CANbus-based S-Link Control Bus that carries control signals and system status information. Suited for 35-70 ft boats and available in 12 and 24 V models, systems also include thruster motor overheating, low input voltage, and short circuit protection.

Imtra Introduces Side-Power "SEP" Speed Control DC Thrusters
New Bedford, Mass. - Imtra, the leading manufacturer and importer of quality marine products, announced today a new line of proportional Speed Control DC thrusters, the Side-Power "SEP" Series thrusters. "SEP" thrusters overcome common over- and under-powering issues associated with other on/off thrusters on the market. Especially important in light weather conditions when excessive thrust can make docking particularly challenging, the new "SEP" thrusters offer boaters full power when they need it and light assistance when little thrust is required. The innovative Side-Power Speed Control Series thrusters allow boaters to select the power they need to make precise boat movements in any weather and sea conditions.
The "SEP" Series thrusters incorporate a Power Control Unit that adjusts the motor's power to ensure the system is delivering the amount of thrust required. It also provides protection against thruster motor overheating, direct drive direction change, low input voltage and potential short circuits. Offering fingertip boat control and an easy-to-set "Hold" function, the system's dual Proportional Control Panel features a backlit LCD display that delivers immediate feedback on any system protection issues, and provides details on battery status, amount of thrust and the direction of thrust, to name a few. This unique "Hold" feature is particularly helpful for short trips to a pier to collect passengers, or for yachts traveling through locks or bridges that utilize their thrusters to maintain position.
The "SEP" Series' main components (power control unit, proportional control panel and DC thruster) are tied together with the new S-Link Control Bus, which provides immediate control and integration of the components. The small and simple to install CANbus-based S-Link system carries control signals and system status information to ensure accurate performance and system diagnostics. Since no power is transported on the bus, the system will never engage as a result of cable cutting, damage or wear. The S-Link cabling system is designed to NMEA 2000 standards, making it easy to devise and implement the installation that best suits an individual boater's needs.
"The Side-Power "SEP" Series is the first and only DC thruster range that can provide the exact proportional power required for easy boat positioning," said Peter Nolet, product manager - Side-Power thruster systems, Imtra. "It eliminates the anxiety and danger of overpowered or underpowered maneuvering around docks, berths or other vessels."
Engineered with the highest safety standards found in all Side-Power thrusters, the DC Speed Control System is ideally suited for 35- to 70-foot boats, and is available in 12V and 24V models. The "SEP" Series proportional capabilities can be retrofitted to compatible Side-Power thrusters. Featuring reliable solid state switching, the new thrusters offer plug-and-play compatible control cable wiring that is easy to fit anywhere between batteries and thruster. The screen on the new Speed Control LCD Control Panel provides intelligent feedback and easy monitoring of the entire thruster system. The system utilizes Side-Power's patented IPC (Intelligent Power Control) technology to protect against direct drive direction change, potential short circuits, low voltage situations, and thermal and over-current situations. The system also actively cools the controller for continuous usage; boaters can further extend run time by operating at less than full power. The Side-Power "SEP" Series thrusters from Imtra are protected by a 2-year limited warranty.
Pricing and Availability:
