July 30, 2009 - Primal(TM) SB-110 and SB-155 waterborne polyacrylate dispersions can be used as sole binder in base coats or combined with select acrylic/polyurethane dispersions to obtain balanced property profile. Used to produce base coats for very soft leathers, Primal SB-110 is optimized for embossing properties, fastness to heat yellowing, cut-through resistance, and low surface tack. Primal SB-155 shares these properties but is suitable for high-covering base coats for embossed leather types.

LANXESS Expands Range of Finishing Products

Leverkusen - Specialty chemicals group LANXESS, one of the leading suppliers of systems solutions for the leather industry, has added two new soft acrylic base coat resins to its range of finishing products. The two waterborne polyacrylate dispersions Primal(TM) SB-110 and Primal(TM) SB-155 are manufactured by The Dow Chemical Company and marketed by LANXESS AG's Leather business unit.

The acrylic emulsion Primal(TM) SB-110 is a technology advancement from the successful Primal(TM) SB-100, offering improved embossing properties, fastness to heat yellowing, cut-through resistance and lower surface tack. Primal(TM) SB-110 can be used to produce base coats for very soft leathers that are characterized by high wet and dry flex resistance, good print retention, good filling and covering properties. For a binder of this softness it has remarkably low tack and good plate release. Leathers base-coated with a formulation containing Primal(TM) SB-110 also retain more of their inherent softness.

Compared with its successful predecessor Primal(TM) SB-150, the new, advanced polyacrylate chemistry of the Primal(TM) SB-155 has improved cut-through resistance, better fastness to heat yellowing and lower surface tack. Primal(TM) SB-155 is a soft acrylic base coat binder with optimized embossing properties. The product is particularly suitable for high-covering base coats for embossed leather types. Formulations based on Primal(TM) SB-155 have superb plate release and excellent print retention. Base coats formulated with this binder are particularly resistant to cut-through when embossed at high temperatures and pressures, especially on empty crust leathers. This makes Primal(TM) SB-155 an ideal choice for formulating base coats for corrected and full grain crusts, for example upholstery leather.

Primal(TM) SB-110 and Primal(TM) SB-155 can each be used either as the sole binder in base coats or combined with selected acrylic or polyurethane dispersions to obtain a carefully balanced property profile.

Effective April 1, 2009, the former specialty chemicals company Rohm and Haas has been incorporated into The Dow Chemical Company. The marketing agreement concluded between LANXESS and Rohm and Haas in 1997 will now be continued with Dow. This agreement concerns the provision of technical service and the marketing of product ranges such as Primal(TM), Hydrholac(TM), Leukotan(TM), Lubritan(TM) and Rosilk(TM). Dr. Bernhard Wehling, Head of LANXESS's Leather business unit, says: "Our target is to offer our customers the best possible solutions that will help them meet the challenges of their daily work.
Our colleagues at the former Rohm and Haas Company are proven experts in the field of acrylate technology. For historical reasons, we at LANXESS are leading suppliers of polyurethane finishing dispersions. So our customers benefit from a wide range of products and comprehensive service."

LANXESS is one of the leading suppliers of systems solutions for the leather industry, from chemicals for all stages of the manufacturing process to intensive technical support. The Leather business unit is part of LANXESS's Performance Chemicals segment, which posted sales of EUR 1,930 million in fiscal 2008.

LANXESS is a leading specialty chemicals company with sales of EUR 6.58 billion in 2008 and currently around 14,600 employees in 23 countries. The company is represented at 44 production sites worldwide. The core business of LANXESS is the development, manufacturing and marketing of plastics, rubber, intermediates and specialty chemicals.
