General Ruby and Sapphire Co. Provides Ruby and Sapphire Parts

General Ruby and Sapphire Co. provides ruby and sapphire parts that can be depended on for critical tolerances and purity. Because of their unique mechanical and optical properties, ruby and sapphire have a variety of uses for optics, electronics and optoelectronics, fine mechanics and laser technologies.

Some of the features of sapphire that make it an invaluable material for so many applications include optical transmission range, heat resistance, hardness, chemical resistance, thermal conductivity and electrical non-conductivity.

The most important optical characteristics of sapphire are the wide spectrum of transmission, high optical transmission and low distortion and scatter. The transmission range of sapphire is from microwave, vacuum ultraviolet and visible through infrared. A low, homogenous refractive index means low wavefront distortion even for larger windows. The refractive index has low dependence on temperature, making sapphire extremely dependable for imaging optics applications.

Sapphire does not melt until 2040°C, and maintains its purity even at extreme high temperatures. It is extremely hard and scratch resistant. It is insoluble in most common industrial solutions and resistant to corrosion from acids including sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. This combination of physical and optical qualities makes sapphire important in space, medical, military and other applications.
