Avery Dennison Debuts the Flexis(TM) Air for Coffee Pre-Oiled Degassing Valve at 2011 Coffee Summit

New Pre-Oiled Valve Increases Application Throughput, Cuts Waste

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - Coffee packaging and operations engineers seeking ways to increase efficiencies in the coffee roasting and packaging process while improving the freshness of their coffee products will find a powerful new solution from Avery Dennison at The National Coffee Association's (NCA) Coffee Summit, September 14 - 15, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Alexandria, Va.

At the Summit, Avery Dennison Designed and Engineered Solutions will introduce the new Flexis(TM) Air for Coffee pre-oiled one-way valve. The valve thoroughly degasses packaged coffee, offers superior leak resistance, bonds securely and can be pre-applied to packaging materials. The valve's new patent-pending pre-oiled feature enables packagers to apply valves without having to add oil immediately prior to application.

"The oil acts as an internal sealant," explains Bill Hartman, business development director, Avery Dennison Designed and Engineered Solutions. "We have developed a process for incorporating the sealant into the Flexis valve during its manufacture, eliminating the need for users to apply it in their packaging process. The valves are delivered to customers 'package ready.' Eliminating the need for applying oil can increase throughput and reduces both mess and waste in the user's packaging process."

High Speed Application

Flexis Air for Coffee valves can be applied using automatic label application systems at speeds significantly higher than injection molded heat seal-applied degassing valves. In addition, the highly flexible valves have more reliable adhesion and greater leak resistance than stiffer competitive valves.

"Traditional coffee valves are either stiff or slow to apply or have a tendency to leak," Hartman says. "The Avery Dennison Flexis Air for Coffee valve uses advanced materials and a unique multi-layer structure, which makes it more flexible and, therefore, more reliable than stiffer conventional coffee valves. In addition, the low profile of the Flexis Air for Coffee valve allows it to be pre-applied to packaging materials before filling."

Flexis Air for Coffee Valve versus Bin Degassing

The Flexis Air for Coffee valve delivers multiple advantages compared with an alternative degassing process called bin degassing.

Bin degassing can take a week or longer to complete and could expose the coffee to oxygen, which robs it of its freshness. By taking advantage of the Flexis Air Coffee valve, coffee processors can improve throughput and help reduce expenses associated with inventory and bin outlays, while helping to increase product freshness.

Avery Dennison Flexis Air for Coffee valves can be printed with logos and promotional messages, such as "Packaged with Flexis(TM) Air for Coffee valve for added freshness."
